The slender form of the abdomen makes me guess it's a paper wasp .

If you look at normal wasps or hornets, the abdomen is more bulky and doesn't have that smooth outline from the thorax to the rear.

Paper Wasps also deliver a painful sting.

Over 20 years ago I had a student job to mass ID insects.

My undergrad was in Zoology. I liked mammals and arthropods. Fish and Birds I am not so good at. Learned more when I was older. But my jobs mostly involved computers and or biology and later games and 3D stuff. So not an expert. Biology was always more of a hobby as jobs are rare. I have not a single official computer qualification to my name.

Kind of a jack of all trades thing. Yeah I have 1 of those too
Not in the zoology field though.
I was always fascinated though by sharks and dinosaurs.

what did you do studywise?

Joe-Lynn-Design In reply to Dr-Koesters [2012-09-05 21:10:44 +0000 UTC]

Its a pretty long story but I actually have none

In my defense though I took a rotary class in school - drafting (architectural), electrical, welding, carpentry, motor mechanics, machine shop and more but I can't think of them. I quit school 2 years early.
Then 30 years as a fisherman and the better part of 20 years being captain I have put all of those and many more skills to use including navigation and management of a crew of up to 6 men being responsible for the safety of the boat and crew

I bought 2 acres of land and cleared myself and built my own home and always did a large percentage of the plumbing and wiring and doors and windows. Also ran outboard motors on boats and tended for divers. Scuba and surface air in very harsh winter conditions.

Then I got my high school at 41 and moved west where I worked in rigging (hooks and chains, cables, slings and stuff for cranes and equipment). We proof tested to 1 million lbs so pretty heavy duty stuff. I was a cable splicer then foreman and eventually operations manager. Then the bottom fell out of the oil industry and things went sour. The wife did it too. She made the synthetic straps. Truck straps and tie downs.
Now I have nothing on paper but am more qualified them most people. I blew my arms bad though splicing cable and can't do that kind of work anymore.
