Description
It's no secret I'm not a fan of the new Supergirl costume, or the Michael Turner version. My favorite Supergirl is the one who went toe-to-toe with Mongul and punched out Warworld.I hate to see Kara mistreated. It's a thing.

Love it. Her comments are spot-on! The full top and longer skirt and cape is my favorite look.

Your Welcome. Supergirls comments are very funny and right on the money. Her current costume is not as good as it could or should be!

For Supergirl, I think the costume should be good-girl sexy, not slutty-sexy. She should be the hot cheerleader you can never have, not the porn star dressed as a cheerleader you can hook up with on craiglist for $1500 a night.

Hehehe. Thanks. I love the art in the current Supergirl comic, but I just can't get into the costume. I thought the slutty cheerleader costume from Michael Turner was bad, but this is like porn-star slutty looking. Not that there's anything wrong with that, for anyone but Kara.

I think Jim Lee is an awesome artist, but costume design is not one of his strengths. And I hate the idea of an entire line being designed with what seems to be a single aesthetic. Green Lantern does not need a "utility" suit, nor does Superman or Supergirl.

I really like some of the art I've seen, but the costume bugs me and stuff I've heard about the series bugs me more. My favorite version of Supergirl, apart from the original, was the animated version in the Superman and justice League cartoons. I loved her origin, her attitude and the way they ended with her in the Legion.

The animated Supergirl was awesome. I wish they had used the JLU episode to launch the Legion series.

This piece is great and made me laugh! -- I'd love to see Supergirl migrate to Marvel and share an apartment with Ms. Marvel! - LOL

DC still messes things up...
especially the Linda Danvers (EarthAngel) Supergirl where they separated her daughter Ariella from her...
DC still sucks dead air for that insipid stunt..
And Hotpants likewise for the win, too...

I hated the Matrix/Supergirl with a fiery passion, when Byrne intro'd her. Then I read how he'd done it against his will, because the lawyers said they needed a Supergirl to keep the trademark going. Okay, that's fine, but I never liked that version, because she was just a blonde Martian Manhunter. Run down the list, she had all of J'onn's powers, with her telekinetic bursts taking place of the "martian vision" force blasts J'onn had before they switched it to heat vision in JLA Year One.
That being said, Peter David totally won me over during his run on Supergirl, finally making her into a character worthy of the name. Then they went and screwed her over. I wish they'd been able to continue with PAD's Supergirls idea, have Linda, the newly arrived Kryptonian Supergirl and Power Girl share the book.

BWAH-HAHAHAAHAHA
That is perfect.
But, once Peter David locked down her shapeshifting powers, he managed to turn her into a respectable character. I even liked the Linda Supergirl of the later series, too.

The best was the hot pants. Seriously. She could fly and be seen from any angle without exposing herself.

If you look through my gallery, you'll easily see which is my favorite costume of all time.
It's the first one I saw, when I started collecting comics and I don't think there's been a better one since. I always thought the skirts were more than a little impractical, because of the exposure issue. And, while I enjoy a nice upskirt view as well as the next guy, where heroes are concerned, I prefer something slightly more modest.

Yeah, Supergirl... you're so right... only, if Disney buys DC, there will be no point in having any competition between Marvel and DC... as if Nintendo and Sega, back in the days, had joined forces...
That design was my favorite as well. I liked Michael Turner's version for the sexiness, but the new one looks completely ridiculous to me. So I'm on your side.

I didn't find Turner's design any sexier than some of the earlier versions. I hated the yellow trim.
This new version, with all the segment lines and the genital flap-looking thing, ugh. I've never thought Jim Lee was a great costume designer. I guess it's supposed to be Kryptonian armor or something. Why do they need armor? Bulletproof, remember?
I liked the cartoon versions best, out of the recent versions.

Have you seen Superman's new costume for Snyder's upcoming movie? He's got some sort of bracelets... and you're right, Jim Lee, in my heart, may be a great penciller, but a costume designer? Nope.
Kryptonian armor... my God... Chris Reeve has got to be shaking his head right now.

Yeah. I am sick of the rubber suits. If they want to make his suit look "alien" why not CGI the whole thing?
They fail brand design forever!
Superman's suit doesn't have to be functional as clothing, apart from keeping him somewhat modest. It serves as his calling card, it's his brand. The Superman brand says, "Here's a guy you can trust! Sure, I can squash your head like a pimple, but I'd much rather help you get this kitten out of a tree." To that end, the design needs to be clean, clear and bold. John Byrne got that, when he doubled the size of the S-shield on Superman's chest.

I couldn't have said it best.
Superman is an alien, granted, but his suit, in my mind, represents as much his symbol as a sign from his own modesty. When Cristopher Reeve graced the silver screen with that outfit, I knew everything was perfect. Then, everything that came afterwards seemed out-there.

I'm not trained in design, but I always think the K.I.S.S. principle applies to costume design as much as it does anything. All this filigree and texturing and added bits, they may look interesting up close, but they sometimes muddy the design in long shots. Like the black-on-black-on-black Batman suits in the more recent movies. For me, they just don't work.

I agree on the K.I.S.S. principle, although as for Batman, they obviously took a more "realistic" approach rather than the Adam West or Joel Schumacher way...

Realistic in one sense, but not others. No way he cold fight with all that body armor they put on him. Bale is pretty damn fit and the suit weighs him down. There are materials, real materials, that could be used or simulated, that are not heavy or bulky. And they provide protection from impact due to a phenomenon called "shear thickening". You hit them, they go rigid. Downhill skiers are using the stuff, now. Some of these materials will stop bullets. And they can be worked into tight-fitting suits, like skiers wear.
And stealth does not require black on black, it just requires low reflectivity. And the way they throw the cape back over his shoulders, it offers no protection. The cape conceals/obscures his body, providing shooters with an amorphous target. Also, there are cape fighting techniques that they could work into his routine. And can we please lose the growling?
Right now, my favorite depiction of Batman, visually, is in the Young Justice cartoon.

I'm not holding my breath. I am waiting to see Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns animated movies. If I was making a Batman movie, Year One would be my template. I've seen fan-made films that show you can make the costume in the comic suit style and make it look great.
