Description

A birthday gift for my friend Umbramatic featuring two characters from the conquest arc of the TV Tropes roleplay We Are All Pokémon Trainers. To the left is her character, the Ghost Lord, a former priest of Giratina turned conquering Daimyo of the nation of Spectra who plans to put all of Ransei under his despotic rule. The other is Suzaku Katsuragi, an OC I designed but currently belongs to TheAbsentCoder, another player in the RP. Katsuragi appears in the RP as a runerigus who once haunted the Pokemon World's version of the British Museum. In his old life, he was a samurai from a family sworn to the service of the Ghost Lord and was among those chosen to be part of his personal guard, which carried a lot of prestige. In practice, he was more of a glorified security guard for the Ghost Lord's treasure rooms. He took his job very seriously, enough to want a picture of him with the boss made.

This image of them was inspired from a certain gag picture from Disney's Mulan, which is set in a fictionalized depiction of Han Dynasty China. The Ranseians, of course, are based on Sengoku-era Japan, so I based the image on Japanese prints and portraits from the period, which explains the lack of shading. I even got the texture overlay from an actual Yamato-e print to get the look right. I had planned on adding more picture elements and accurate statements in Kanji, but I lacked the time to do both and could only find transliterations for place and person names and even then I'm not too sure about its accuracy.

Armor is based on a commissioned illustration of the Ghost Lord , though with a few differences. Canonically, it could be a different set of armor for a different occasion but shares the same color scheme derived from Giratina.  Extrapolating from this, Katsuragi wears a similarly themed set of armor partially based on Sengoku-era samurai armor. Instead of a kabuto helmet like Katsuragi, the Ghost Lord himself instead wears a kanmuri, worn by courtiers and Shinto priests (a fitting choice of headgear). This specific kanmuri was modeled on the one worn by Tokugawa Ieyasu in this portrait .
