I was examining one of my older pieces of fan art when I realized I'd made a minor mistake. I'm a stickler for detail, as you know, so I decided to spend a few thousand minutes in Photoshop to fix it up. I suppose I should have just updated the old file. It's only one Doctor, after all. But I'll take any excuse to expand the gallery.

Seriously though old paint, I've been growing more and more attached to John Hurt's "War Doctor" (who is actually simply the Ninth Doctor, but we're not allowed to call him that because it's simpler to make things more complicated), star of the somewhat uneven but quite inspiring 50th anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor." If you're not in the know, this guy was created for this one storyline, and retroactively added as a heretofore unseen incarnation of the Doctor who just now makes his presence known, upsetting the previously established impression that Chris Eccleston's Doctor was the Ninth Doctor. Though he's still referred to as the Ninth Doctor, meaning that we've now sort of got FOUR of these guys. Mr. Grant's cartoon character, Mr. Atkinson's comedy skit, Eccleston's de-facto place in history, and Hurt's retroactively applied lost boy. In principle I actually really like the idea, since it's a show about time travel and I find it therefore quite refreshing to actually approach the Doctor's life in a non-linear manner for a change. But CRIPES, have they ever made a headache for the fanbase for years to come.

In any case, I'm finding it hard to put this guy away so easily. I keep picturing him in his faded costume, which I didn't like at all at first glance but it's since grown on me, and with his hang-dog expression and marvelous facial hair, and it kind of kills me that we're probably not going to see him again. Furthermore, his lack of tenure will lead to his being marginalized in the lore of Doctor Who, leaving him without a square of his own in the Wikipedia article devoted to the character, or a distinct category over at A Teaspoon and an Open Mind , or a slot in much of the fan art that DeviantArt will no doubt see produced over the coming years. Meanwhile, Peter Capaldi is set to take over as "the Twelfth Doctor," in spite of being both the thirteenth incarnation and the thirteenth actor to officially hold the role. Do you know how much that bugs an obsessive compulsive like me? Well, it's not like that sort of thing can be measured. What, you think I'm going somewhere with this? Hey I got nothing to say, I'm just filling space here, right? I'm just showin' love for the guy.

At least now McGann's got company in the Land of Misfit Doctors.

Okay, that said... getting back to the soul of the work. Mustn't forget the forest for the trees, after all. How would this scenario play out with this Doctor instead of Eccleston's Doctor? Let's see...

Sometimes seconds trip over themselves. Sometimes time doubles back. Like a crowded beach, tracks in the sand become confused and sometimes you can't tell which footprints were yours and which were made by someone else. And then you notice you're alone...
It generally falls to Time Lords to iron out the wrinkles when causality becomes indecisive. But they're busy at the moment. Which suits the Doctor just fine, as it makes breaking into the armory that much easier. Not that it's really going to be easy, per se. The security systems are almost as ancient and potent as the weapons they were designed to protect. Case in point, the final fail safe he is currently in the midst of cracking. If it doesn't crack him first, that is. Quite clever, really, routing whole other universes into a single stopgap measure. What better means of deterrence than persuasion?
How can the Doctor decide what's selfish and what isn't when there are two alternatives staring him in the face, and the worlds they represent are rich and tempting and... calm?
There are three Doctors in a room, and one of them is sad. One of them is terrifically bored with it all, and the other one doesn't like the smell of oblivion.
Two of them are going to die. And the third one has no intention of surviving.
Why can't anything ever be simple where time is concerned? It was hard enough going up and down it, to say nothing of side-to-side...
