Description
Commission AN ENTIRE YEAR IN THE MAKING, and hopefully worth the wait for my good friend Steve Lufrano. Steve commissioned me LAST NOVEMBER to do a Chief surrounded by Elites, but kept saying "It's okay, do all the work you need to get done first, do mine when you get free time." One year later, I realized that would never happen! So what better way to deliver than on HALO 4 DAY!Now WAKE UP, JOHN!

I love this!! My husband and I just beat Halo 4 a couple weeks ago, we're both huge fans. The crispness of your lines and color is awesome!! The detail and lighting effects are superb.

I like it, but I feel like it uses too much reference. I would've liked to have seen how you would've naturally done the Chief.

Here's how I percieve the mater chief (if he was thinking in a slightly childish and humored manner):
Chief: Zealot...Zealot...Zealot
(Zealot shows up)
Chief: *Bang Bang* One down..
(another shows up)
Chief: *bang* You too splitty..
(and yet another..)
Chief: *Grenade* You as well severed sunshine!
(and again, more)
Chief: *Brandishes knife* Well, being a butcher was a humans favourite sport~
(He then proceeds to eliminate all zealots with just a KNIFE)
----
To sum up why I wrote that down, this was my reaction to having fought Zealot after ruthless Zealot on Heroic H4 Campaign and Ops missions. The sad thing was, the Campaign (even on Heroic and Legendary difficulties) is not as "slap-you-in-the-face-with-a-brick" jump-happy as Ops. What I mean is, the enemies don't jump on you as much in the main missions as they do in Ops, which I found rather idiotic of 343i (my opinion, apologies if I offended any of you guys ^^'). To be honest, the lack of ruthlessness in the Campaign kind of prepared you for the slightly (and I quote the word "slightly" here for a reason) more difficult(?) missions in Spartan Ops.
....Anyways,
What should i say of this picture? Hmm...
Well the detail on the Chief's gritty (and very awesome-looking, by the by) armor is electrifying the hairs on my skin because of how crisp it is. Literally, my hair is on end because of all the pieces of metal that are laced into one another are present for perfection eye-candy. oh and hey, look, you even got the eccentric detail of his helmet-lamps too. That's cool, nice little detail there.
Even his rifle (being an MA5D and all) looks just like it's name states. I'm not gonna hammer precisely on other artworks out there, but whenever I saw these images, my mind always thought them for MA5C's instead. This image does not give off that effect, which is good.
....
Now while I understand the Remnant Zealots are not the main focus of this work, I would like to point that even though they are not as pain-stakingly detailed as the Chief (good job by the way) I can easily notify myself that they are Halo 4-esque Zealots and not Reach Spec-Ops (which is where the confusion came in, when the first image were released over a year ago, they do look very similiar right?), that is a bonus I admire.
In my opinion, I'd have enjoyed if the Elite were a little more detailed at least. but, as I stated earlier, there is enough detail there to distinguish them. I apologise if my words are mistook for crappy "wanty-needy" behaviour. I didn't want to come across as such.
Final verdict? It's a great work, you captured the idea of what Halo 4 means (in general terms, even if some of the character design and such were a bit non-halo-ish (again my opinion) ): the waking of a legendary warrior, bent on an attempt to continue the life-span of a close (yet-too-twitchy) AI companion, and to kick the pair-of-huge-ass-cheeks of the most "Darstardly-Evil-Forerunner"(what?) in the galaxy.
To sum it up short, great work Joe, and hopefully, if I float over to your gallery again, I'll see more like this. Safe travels Spartan, and prepare for the next horizon of flying shrapnel, plasma rounds and flailing alien limbs. Be the flesh or mechanical.

I can't edit my message can I? I think I made a spelling mistake.
Anyways, I'm always glad to lend my opinion to art pieces that peeked my interest, and well, to be honest, yours did. I hope you do more soon.

Wow! I really like how you illustrated the Chief's armor - it's stylized, but still with a lot of detail. The coloring and the way the Elites fade into the background there is very nice too. Lovely work, thank you for sharing!

You're most welcome.
I just wish I could commission you...but I can't. I don't really have the money nor am I savy with how to use the system to pay you with.
I'm trying to sell my art like you, but I don't know how.

I love how well done John is, though I'll be honest, the Elites make me laugh a little. I guess it's cause they're wearing the crimson-red armor and those ones were always the one that would kill me in the games (Legendary). Very good work indeed.

Haha, they always give us trouble until we take a Plasma Pistol and DMR/BR/Carbine combo to their split-jawed faces.

I know that a commission is when someone asks an artist to do some art for them, and this might sound like a stupid question, but in every detail how does a commission work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JoeHoganArt In reply to CadeJaw [2012-11-11 07:38:02 +0000 UTC]
It's cool, my friend! You learn by asking! People do commissions for various types of payment, but unfortunately, I can only accept money (as opposed to DA points or a trade), as this is how I make my living! Commission money literally pays my rent and bills.
So the person who wants the art tells me what they want, and I quote a price that's fair for the amount of time and work that goes into it. I am then paid in advance, and produce the work requested.
