DARK FORCES I, BABY!This is the second part for 's prize from the EU contest. Since there's two of them, I definitely had to split the love and the prize for them.
Mick's digital sketch card request was the final battle between not-yet-Jedi Kyle Katarn and General Mohc in his Phase III Dark Trooper, the final boss of the first Dark Forces game for the PC...back in the early 90s!!
Drawing Kyle without a beard was a challenge, but fun at the same time! If you'll notice, I drew the majority of Kyle's face the same way I have been lately, with the exception of that beard, and I also lost the gray in his hair since he was much younger during this fight!

Get him, Kyle! Nail that mastermind of the Dark Troopers! Oh, it's graphic but it's a fun piece all right. Sometimes the most dramatic pics are usually the best.

And then Kyle became a Jedi and got to play with a lightsaber - and thus became the unstoppable natural disaster looking for a place to happen that we all know and love.

Ha. I was just playing Battlefront 2 the other day and thinking to myself how a Dark Trooper would look in your unique and awesome artistic style. Little by little, you're covering vast parts of the Star Wars universe of characters. And yet, there are so many more to conquer. C'est la vie.
The Dark Trooper blows me away, but seeing Kyle without a beard is an interesting concept, too. Just another reminder of how behind I am with Star Wars...I need to play this game.

haha Thanks dude! Yeah, I'm a big fan of the Dark Trooper. Ever since I first got into Star Wars in the 90s, I've loved this guy's design. I haven't drawn him in about a decade! So it's definitely fun to do that again!

Haha. You've been into Star Wars since the 90's...?! Wow. That's when I got in, around 1997 when I was around 5 years old. I still don't see Dark Troopers enough, so this piece really blew me away.

haha I became a fan in 95, only a few years before you! In 95, a friend of mine introduced the originals to me (I was in the 4th grade, I think!) and I fell in love immediately! That was a great time to become a fan, because the Special Editions brought a whole lot of new content out with it, and then the big Prequel rush started soon after! Fun times!!

Haha. I'd only seen A New Hope once and I was hooked. Then my Uncle handed me the Special Editions soon after I got into Star Wars, and I would literally watch them every day. That was RIGHT before TPM came out. I was in heaven.
Those were good times.

That looks awesome, I havent played that game, but that trooper seems a it like Predator which makes that pretty badass hes one arming him up in the air like that.

COOL! I love the hand-to-hand fighting here, I always wondered how Kyle could have beaten a Phase III darktrooper without video game logic of shooting over and over until his health runs out. This answers that! Jedi or not, Kyle is one badass dude.

DUDE-- JOE-- BUDDY! This is EPIC!!! You did a superb job capturing a younger Kyle in your style (hey look I can rhyme)! lol As an artist, your attention to detail is awesome-- everything from the cuts and gashes all over Katarn to the textured armor the on Rom Mohc's Phase III DT armor-- right down to the nicks and tarnishing on Katarn's chest plate! I see great reference from the game and action figure-- I may have to go get mine (figure) and carry him around today's adventure! rofl Having fits of nostalgia right now! You even have the silver triangle on his glove-- nothing like punching out a bucket-head! lol The look of determination in Kyles face even in what looks like his last stand gives this over the top drop dead drag 'em out brawl worthy of the title "Die Hard In Space." The pose and the scale of the Dark Trooper reminds me of that classic moment when the Predator lifted Arny off the ground for the final battle-- and Kyle Katarn is gonna use that Bryar Blaster like Dirty Harry's 44. Magnum-- "Feeling luck, Punk?!" This picture represents THIS IS IT-- THIS IS THE MOMENT OF TRUTH-- THIS IS WHAT HAS BEEN LEADING UP TO THE GIGANTIC EXPLOSIVE CLIMATIC END! I'm so pleased you noticed the details that I definitely wanted to include (the action figure was a big help! haha) and I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't include the glove triangles! They're in the damn game when you beat people up!! hahaha
I'm psyched you love the scenario and the pose, too!! haha I definitely wanted a sense of urgency for Kyle, but at the same time, wanted it to be that "well, I'm dead if this doesn't work" opportunity for him too! haha

Ah, the good old days of Dark Forces... brings back memories. I doubt Kyle is gonna achieve anything with that Bryar pistol against Mohc, but hey, he's Kyle kriffin' Katarn after all.
Love the lineart in this one. The separation of the darker smooth parts from the lighter detailed parts of Mohc's Dark Trooper armor is very clever. Hurting Kyle and tearing off his clothes is also a great touch, really gives a feeling he's fighting for his life. All in all, awesome piece as always.

With all this stuff going on, I love the attention to detail you still managed to fit in. Katarn's shirt and the detailing on the lines for the armour stand out for me. Also, colouring a dark trooper suit looks like it'd be a PAIN. XD
And yes. There was a point in time where Kyle's chin was NOT another Bryar Blaster.
That, or it's a dramatised version with an actor with a normal chin.

Yeah, this put the DARK in DARK TROOPER! haha It was pretty annoying finding the right color scheme with the harsh lighting I wanted. But once I found it, I was psyched! And thanks! I'm glad you noticed the wear and tear on Kyle's chest armor!
