The movie takes place 30 to 35 years after the destruction of the second Death Star, with the New Republic apparently existing as a small-but-growing institution while the Empire's presence is weakened, but still felt. in laymens term there weaken incredibly what with both both palpatine and vader gone yet still there and ready to fight.
