They're voids around the general location of the mouth.
Which is to say, the costume heads are hollow, large enough for an adult man's head to fit inside, and don't have any lips.
A guest would likely find the costumes themselves creepy, but I don't imagine accidental discovery causing any sort of problems for Professor Utonium.
