Description
Hi everyone,
As promised, here is another leader character I painted for Dark Ages; Rollo, Duke of Normandy.
Before Rollo became duke, he was a viking warlord who raided the Franks, until he received land from emperor Charles the Simple, where he would defend Frankia against his former allies. His descendant would be William the Conqueror and king of the Normans.
Any Vikings watchers anyone? How do you think they portrayed Rollo?
Looking forward to any thoughts you might have about the piece!
Best,
JCH

A very cool portrait of Rollo also known as Hrolfr (his scandinavian first name) and baptized as Robert in 912.
It's hard to say what he could look like because it's difficult to find the truth in the legends about his life,
he was described as very tall about 2 meters tall and was probably Norwegian.Β
(I'm living in its city Rouen, where he was buried)

You're welcome. I've not watched the Vikings serie yet but I assume you're right.
Rollo was buried in the Cathedral of Rouen, probably in 933.
The historians have still a doubt about the year of his death.
Β
In the Cathedral Notre Dame de Rouen, there are four funerary monuments,
four gisants representing Rollo and his descendants, all dukes of Normandy,Β
his son William Longsword (who was the great grandfather of William the Conqueror),
Richard Lionheart, Duke of Normandy and King of England and his brother Henry the Young King.
Rollo is often called Duke of Normandy nowadays but to be exact him and his son
were called Jarls of Normandy.

Of course it's open to everybody like most of the churches in France.Β
The gisant of Rollo is located in the ambulatory of the cathedral.
The monument is from the XIIIth century.Β
He's lying in a last prayer with a leopard at his feet
cause leopards are the symbols of Normandy.
(They look more like lions in my opinion but in heraldry
theyΒ are called and described as leopards)
Here's a picture of it.Β

You're welcome.
Rouen is a place worth to visit, we have a beautiful museum of arts
and a brand new museum near the cathedral dedicated to Joan of Arc
who was burnt in 1431 in Rouen. We have a beautiful historical center
with tiny streets full of half-timbered facades (Renaissance and XVI/XVIIth century)
We have many beautiful churches like St-Maclou and the Cathedral Notre Dame
which is a true wonder painted several times by Claude Monet.
We also have two big panoramic views on the hills overhanging the city,
you can thave a look at my gallery for some pictures of Rouen.
In a nutshell my answer would be a : yes, sir !Β

True battle horses( big enough to carry an armoured warrior) didnβt come for a few centuries later, horse-breeding just wasnβt that good yet.

Often depending upon the terrain, on flat ground without fortifications, a well trained cavalry was indeed a key to victory, but by the 14th century there was already pretty well trained infantry bands that when choosing their terrain carefully managed to knock out cavalry viewed as cream of the crop which would be repeated again & against in later centuries with infantry armed with missile weapons. After-all we humans fight best with what weβre comfortable with, and weβre become awfully great with missile weapons. Cavalry had a limited life span
