Sick rules of thirds. Are you using a flash at all? Well let me ask first, do you own a DSLR?

yes i shoot with a Nikon D5000 DSLR. i love it!
no flash was used. i don't own an external flash. i have 3 continuous lights with soft boxes and a 42" reflector.

Ok I got ya. Well craigslist works wonders for finding a flash. I always see very low shutter speeds which makes taking a crisp clean shot very very hard. If you have to, bump the ISO up to around 400 and an f-stop of about 5.6 to 7.1. That should give you a nice enough slice of dof to keep your eyes in perfect focus. Most lens's sweet spot is between 9 and 11, but to blur the background, those other f-stop settings work a little better while keeping your dof in check. (if you didn't know already.
