self searching...good title for what I feel looking at this.
I am wondering if I really have any business trying to be an artist.
Sorry...I shouldn't indulge myself this way.
Your work is wonderful. I love looking at it.

thanks...the fact that you are wondering probably means you should be an artist!

I am not taking what you have said lightly....it means a lot, and I feel in my heart you are right.
Thank you.

Definitely, and although my comment could be taken in several ways, I was sincere. It is something I try to convey to my son (11) when he is doing artwork. It is okay to take your time. I also don't want him to judge his work, especially in the beginning stages, because he sometimes doesn't see where it or he is going. To me, the ultimate goal is expression and if other people like the art, then that is a bonus. Unfortunately, because he thinks it is normal to take his time, he sometimes has problems finishing his artwork at school, because they have alloted time segments. But, in the long run, I think it will be worth it.

Yes..that is something I have to deal with. Most of my work is class assignments. I barely have time for them as it is. Those changes I was mentioning in my husband were that he has cancer. He comes first.

JoeMacGown In reply to kmaier99 [2008-03-26 19:36:14 +0000 UTC]

ouch, yeah, I wondered if that was what you meant. I wasn't sure if it was something you wanted to talk about, so I didn't ask. Cancer sucks...everything else is put in perspective in these situations and things that used to be important are suddenly less important.

Wow! thanks, and you are probably right, it probably does say something about me. Although I am not sure if that is a good thing or not? I know I get weird looks from lots of people here in Mississippi when they view my artwork!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaF In reply to JoeMacGown [2008-02-22 22:53:12 +0000 UTC]

I meant that statement with utmost sincerity, and I can assure you it is a positive reflection of your inner self.

My painting teacher grew up in Mississippi, and she always says how the people in Mississippi were a bit "ignorant" to more of the surreal and abstract types of artwork. She really emphasized how disappointing it always was for her. If they are giving you weird looks that probably means that your work is unlike and beyond anything they have ever seen before, and they may not know what to think of it. Be proud when the weird looks start forming on people's faces: because you are more than likely showing something they have never seen, and hopefully their minds will open up and expand, and they will become more able to embrace all kinds of artwork. hehe your work may change the way Mississippi looks at art!

JoeMacGown In reply to AthenaF [2008-02-23 21:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, your teacher is right! And I always give them something to look at that they haven't seen. In fact, its one reason I still live here. If everybody with different ideas left, then nothing would ever change!
