Description My first fully animated piece!

My teacher had given us the initial dialog, and encouraged us to do whatever we wanted with the push and motion. Just tell a story. So I added some bonus dialog and and sound effects to make it more interesting.

Also my first piece ever animated at 30fps, kind of by accident, though.

I'd be pretty bored too if I were a cow.

Very Creative Job you did Here, I don't Know If It Reminds me/Makes me Think of Jhonen Vasquez's Art-style or Not.

Thank you!
Jhonen has actually been a huge influence on me in general, so there's actually a decent reason you might get that. Good catch!

any tips for a young animator?

Thanks! I've never really been asked that before...

I guess aside from the standard cliche work hard, draw every day, study, blah blah blah... I'd have to say to remember one golden rule: There are no set rules. Even from the start, animators were just trying to have fun and create funny pictures. They had to find their own rules, and a lot of the time they were broken. So don't be afraid to play and experiment. Let it be fun, and not just something standard from a book. You'd be surprised how many people get stuck in that kind of mentality.

Good luck animating!

Thank you so much for answering!
I just have two more questions:
When you animate on paper (like this animation) how do you do that?
And if I want to animate digitally do you know which program I should use?

JoeMcGro In reply to WeLoveYouFoREVer [2011-12-11 21:11:49 +0000 UTC]

No problem!

Traditional paper animation can get pretty hard. After you know your characters, you kind of have to plan out everything before you ever start. Then using a light-table, try and draw key poses, or the main poses that tell the story or sell the action. Then you figure out how many drawings it'll take to get from one pose to the next and draw them where you need! A great book to look at is Richard Williams' Animators Survival Guide. He kind of walks you through everything as far as the drawings. How to animate books will also walk you through the process in much more detail. I hear if you don't have a camera for animation, a webcam and some free stop-motion program make great substitutes, but I've never tried it.

As far as digital though, I've been learning that this past semester. Toon Boom is a great program, but it can run a bit on the expensive side. Cheaper options could be Toon Boom Studio/flip book, Anime Studio debut, Photoshop, or even free programs online. I've never worked with any other than Toon Boom Animate though, so I can't help much beyond that.

Definitely look for the Richard Williams book though. He kind of sets up everything you'll ever need to animate in a single book (aside from the camera work).

Hope that helps!
