Reblog on Tumblr! I design my own maps for the D&D 5E campaigns that I run and I prefer to use hexagons instead of squares, especially for naturally occurring terrain like caverns and tunnels. This is the latest dungeon I created for an upcoming session. After I draw my maps, I enlarge them to game-scale for use as quick battle maps so I don’t need to hastily draw anything on the wet-erase mat or set up terrain. I don’t actually use the maps as one large piece like this (which is 15 sheets of paper taped together), but rather cut them into pieces by room and lay down only what I need for any given combat, but once I finished taping this map together, I thought it was just too cool not to take a picture first. I think it would be fun just to play a D&D 5E miniatures battle on a huge map like this.

If you want to draw your own game-scale maps, I made a tiling hex-grid template you can download, print out and assemble to make maps as large as you want. Just trim each page on the dashed line and tape them together.
