 1st Place!

 FdV Presents: The Valentine's Classic

Horse:  Solstice d'automne

Rider: Kojima Sakai

Class: Showjumping

Even though Saito had found himself competing at a continental level at the European Masters this year, the shy boy was far from competitive. Placing didn’t matter to him - he’d consider it a miracle if he made it through tear-free. Fortunately for him, a very special blonde could make the stress of shows melt away as he held his gaze or heard his voice. Specifically, Saito’s boyfriend, Kojima, was the reason he didn’t end his last show before it even began out of nerves.

But, Saito wasn’t the only one of the pair with plans in Italy. Kojima too had mentioned wanting to enter a nearby Valentine’s-themed show, and had brought his handsome horse for the occasion. In the aftermath of the show he had just completed, Saito felt a refreshed sense of confidence. Despite that fact, the idea of competing again so soon hadn't yet crossed his mind.
-
Soft pink lips gently met the cheek of Saito. Kojima offered him a smile, and a wink, after a sweetened kiss on his face; reaching back to tie soft locks of wheaten hair behind the top of his head.

"Saito, I was thinking..." He'd start, half muffled around a hair tie in his mouth.

"You did so well in your show, and Whisper is still here. What if you kept the fortune streak going?" The taller man continued after removing the elastic, and finishing his tie.

"The window is still open... You could sign up for the Valentine's Classic, while we're here." A hopeful, excited look glinted in amber eyes. Any experience was good experience, he believed; and with such a quaint show, he thought, 'why not?', as he settled a narrow hand on his shoulder. Despite Saito's debilitating showing anxiety, he had the utmost faith in his partner, and was always proud of him just for trying.
-
A gentle kiss spread a pleasant warmth across Saito’s soft cheeks; his eyes barely opened enough to watch his boyfriend put up his silken hair. He didn’t think he could be any more infatuated with this man than he was at that moment, even if he had told himself the same thing every day, and only ever fell deeper in love every time.

Saito’s content little bubble would burst at Kojima’s suggestion, just for a second. The blue-haired boy pouted at the floor and picked at the polish on his nails. The anxiety made his fingers quiver until the comfort of Kojima’s hand on him drew a slow sigh from his lungs.

“Oh.. I.. I could..” he mumbled with half a dozen thoughts and worries flooding his brain.

“As a date?” He suggested without much thought, because overthinking was the bane of his existence. Somehow, the idea sounded much more palatable with a less competitive motive. Afterall, he’d already won life’s lottery as far as he was concerned, giving his tall, bespectacled prize an encouraging squeeze.
-
Kojima watched as his boyfriends face fell, sinking into unwanted thoughts clearly painting themselves across his face. For a beat, he almost felt as if he made the wrong suggestion, but reminded himself it was always worth the attempt to help Saito show his promising talents to the world... And do justice with his incredible horses.

A slim hand slid itself from his shoulder, to his back, soothingly gliding up and down to try and comfort his racing mind. But his sudden suggestion to a date nearly caught him off guard.

'A horse show? As a date?'

Not that it was a bad idea, it was just something he never would have thought of. A soft giggle bubbled from his chest, and he nodded.

"Yeah, sure. We can spend the day together at the show... And go out for dinner afterwards, somewhere nice. How does that sound?" Two hands took Saito's own as he spoke, soft gold eyes meeting darker inky pools in nothing short of fondness and true love.
-
Once again, Saito’s innocent face lit up as Kojima accepted his little date proposal. What he had described sounded purely perfect; momentarily taking his breath away and clearing the storm of worries brewing behind his eyes.

Instead of wasting words that the shorter man knew would turn into flustered stutters, he simply nodded with enthusiasm and stood on tiptoes to grace his partner’s lips with the sweetest kiss he could deliver.

Soft hands laced, and for the first time in a long time, the thought of competing didn’t fill Saito with dread. Anticipation, maybe; and excitement, for sure.
-
Fast forward to the day of the show, and Kojima was ready before the crack of dawn. He even applied makeup for this show; had to look his best in the ring for his baby; which, mostly consisted of a crazy skin care routine. He wore his finest coordinated outfit; pink, of course; matching the fading color in his hair from his prior events in Greece. Half of this morning was spent double, even triple checking in on his boyfriend, being absolutely sure he felt okay to continue; and they were already off to pick up the horses and arrive.

The one thing Saito didn't know, though... Was a sneaky paper bag in the backseats. He was pretty insistent on getting ready early; and after unloading the horses, performing final touchups on grooming, and situating hay bags; Kojima snuck up on his blue valentine and held out the bag in front of him.

"Surprise~" He'd chime, offering a sweetened smile.

Inside was clusterings of pink and blue faux flowers, sparkles and colorful ribbons.

"I thought it would be fun if we we're matching with the horses.." Kojima would purr, already pulling out a bunch of pink roses for himself.
-
Like his partner, Saito had overprepared on the day of the Valentine’s Classic, too. Much of that involved mental preparation - deep breaths and repeating affirmations. The last thing he wanted was to become overwhelmed at the last minute and bail.

As always, Saito had packed his favourite blue tack set that he trained in. He never knew when he might need to practice in style, after all. Never would he have guessed that he would compete in it, but the sparkly baby blue complimented the theme too well to ignore.

So busy with his thoughts was the boy in blue, that he almost jumped with a gasp as Kojima appeared, mysterious bag in-hand. As the shorter man peered curiously at its contents, his dark eyes sparkled like the ribbons within.

“Ohh, Kojima, they’re so pretty..” he cooed with a sweet smile, pulling out a length of blue ribbon. With nimble elegance, he slipped it around the back of his partner’s neck to pull him down for a kiss; quickly before tugging his sleeve towards the horses in much need of decoration.
-
Kojima almost said something in reply, but he was so charmed by Saito's act of a kiss, all he was left with was cheeks rendered rosy, and big amber eyes sparkling like stars. Speechless, to say the least; and left stumbling after him and smiling like a schoolboy, contently adorning their horses in flowers and ribbons.

He took the time to just walk around with Saito while they waited for their class; doing his best to soothe him with distractions, and of course, little breaks for affections inbetween. As the sun rose in the sky, their class of showjumping approached, and the pair had to take some time to warm up the horses, which didnt stop Kojima checking in and wishing his boyfriend good luck; repeating "You can do it" whenever he passed.

The man in pink took his turn, and had a relatively uneventful run in the ring. As Autumn's attitude ususally displayed, it just seemed like another day in paradise to him, hopping over jumps almost lazily; which required a few light taps of a crop on his shoulder for encouragement to actually meet a competitive speed. The hedge jumps were an interesting incorporation to showjumping, and seemed to be the most compelling for Autumn; seeing as he nearly crashed through it with how late he jumped, just barely nicking the leaves.

During an approach, though, the pastel man spotted a familiar blue figure at the sidelines, and couldn't help but smile. As if he could possibly encourage him even from the show ring itself, his palm lifted to meet his face, and blew a kiss in his direction as Autumn coasted over his hurdle, expertly one-handed.
-
With his beloved boyfriend by his side and soft affections throughout the day, Saito was just about as prepared for the showjumping class as he could have been. He was thankful that Kojima went first because it filled him with pride and adoration to see him soar over the obstacles so effortlessly. Under his breath, he’d mumble,

“That’s my Koji~”

Saito’s eyes never left his boyfriend during his turn in the arena, which was just as well when he caught the kiss in his direction. To anyone else, a one-handed jump would be impressive, and the kiss was a fabulous reflection of the blonde’s charisma. But to Saito, it just meant the absolute world.

The blue-haired boy couldn’t let his partner down, or himself for that matter. He had to do his boys proud; Whisper and Kojima alike. During his own turn, Saito would do his damnedest to stay calm and positive. His sweet-natured horse was ever-forgiving, carrying his rider over the fences, sailing smoothly and landing with grace. With all the faith he had in his horse, Saito would catch a glimpse of his favourite person in the audience and return his affection; a quick heart, shaped with his fingers and a delicate kiss behind them.

Finally, once the final fence was behind them, Saito would release a sigh of relief. He could barely let the adrenaline wear off before finding Kojima once more; intent on kissing him hard for every obstacle he dared to jump because of him.
-
Kojima stared with pride as his favorite horse and rider pair breezed through their jumps; and of course, he couldn't resist snapping a few photos with his phone. It was the thumb and forefinger heart that made him pause, as he felt his chest swell, and a deep smile spread across his face; cheeks dusting pink. His hands drew up to hide his giddy sounds; and quickly, gathered up his reins to trot towards the exit gate, meeting Saito on his way out of the arena.

Horses nearly bumped into eachother when Kojima hooked his finger in the straps of Saito's helmet, dragging him to lean closer and meet in a kiss on horseback; deep and meaningful, full of romance. It was congratualtory on his finish, clearly expressed through beaming golden eyes, glittering with happiness for him. As if on autopilot, Autumn was wandering back towards the trailer, intent on resuming his own personal date with a bag full of lucious hay, and Kojima was already raving about their dinner date that night.
