I knew that when I saw young Once-ler that he looks like Ted. And that also explains why Grandma Norma knows where to find a living tree.

Oh there's a connection all right. Watch the background when the Once-ler opens his door to go out and water the trees. Just behind him and to one side is a framed picture of a young Norma. She looks identical to ted's mom in the image, but it's old, so it has to be her.
