It does indeed look very alien although lovely too. Just beautiful and wonderous in its own way.

Looks pretty cool.

This moon would probably be with in or near the Roche Limit, given the angular diameter of the gas giant. The more distant moons that are significantly closer to the gas giant would likely be torn apart by tidal forces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeyJazz In reply to PaganCrusade [2019-10-07 04:07:17 +0000 UTC]

Not necessarily - it depends on the density/gravitation force of the gas giant.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganCrusade In reply to JoeyJazz [2019-10-07 06:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps... Especially if the gas giant is mostly made of hydrogen, or if it is very hot. For Saturn, the least dense planet in our solar system, the Roche Limit is about 1 of its diameter distance for a small gravitationally rounded moon.

But of course, even if the moon is outside the Roche Limit, there would still be significant effects from the tidal forces if you are anywhere near the Roche Limit. For instance, Io is almost 400,000 km away from Jupiter, about 5 times the distance of Jupiter's Roche Limit, and yet, Io has a high amount of seismic activity due to friction caused by the tidal forces. An even closer moon could potentially become very oblate, much like the egg shaped dwarf planet, Haumea .

JoeyJazz In reply to PaganCrusade [2019-10-07 10:43:33 +0000 UTC]

I agree with these facts. We can guess the effects by observation of closer bodies in our solar system. On the other hand we have no idea about the actual consistence of these bodies in the picture (how solid they are and what materials are they made of). Nevertheless, unless stated otherwise, I don't intent to follow each and every scientific rule to paint space art - it's about 30/70 ratio of aesthetics/science and sometimes even more in favour of the art. It's a sci-fi wallpaper, not HC space art - for those see the 'Experience the planets' section of my gallery.

PaganCrusade In reply to JoeyJazz [2019-10-07 16:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Why of course... I just think it is fun speculation. I wasn't really expecting the art equivalent of an Arthur C Clark novel.

JoeyJazz In reply to PaganCrusade [2019-10-07 16:37:54 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the 'Experience the planets' project was an awesome idea back in the days and I would like to continue with it (probably next summer). You can find the first 10 artworks here:Β  mymodernmet.com/experience-the…
Sadly, Greg decided to pull the original site down (there was around 20 of artworks by several artists). I liked to learn about all the stuff regarding each picture. It was both entertaining and educational.
