A good example of how exaggerated a lot of the propaganda during the war was... These guys were real sailors. Awesome addition!

Until they got direct orders to stop helping survivors after the Laconia incident.

They still helped out a large part of the time though, which is a very honorable thing.
Towards the end of the war it mostly abruptly stopped because convoys and ships were heavily escorted via sea and air assets... Can't do much to hep survivors if it means suicide.
Thankfully though, there was only one documented case where a u-boat machinegunned survivors. Virtually no other crew ever did that It's good to learn about these things... On every side there tend to be reasonable people. Easily overshadowed by the bad, however.
