Description "Bound to read" is created for an *exceeds artpack that has the theme "Bound". Sadly this artpack never will be released because there weren't enough submissions.

Anyway, this was my entry. Three little boys that are bound with a ribbon. It keeps them together to read eachother a story. There are a lot of things that are symbolic in this artwork. Their clothing for example; the jackets are only partly blue. Or the hat; the top of it ends with three little roses. I won't explain it or point out every little thing. Just keep in mind that everything is created with a reason.

Part of my inspiration comes from the the so called "Altered art". Collage artist often use vintage/Victorian photographs. These are altered by using paper, fabric, paint etc etc to spice up the original photograph. A lot of those artists give the person on the picture a hat that is made from a vintage letter or an old newspaper.

The landscape, hat, ribbon etc are created with brushes. A texture was used to create some extra contrast and depth.

'Bound to read' is a typical 'Johnish' artwork. I can imagine myself walking trough that landscape, wearing one of those hats and trying to discover what those boys are reading. Or what the reason is why those boys are fading away (or becoming one) with the landscape. Aaah well, I'm a dreamer. And I don't think that there is something wrong with it

Thanks for viewing and please only fav my work if you really like it

I've seen the work of Maggie Taylor in the past. And she is really a wonderful artist I just had a look at her site and I understand why you mention her. But for the record; I didn't used her work as inspiration or reference, even though the overall feeling might be the same. Ofcourse I was surprised to see one of her artworks where three little boys are wearing those pointy hats If I had known that, I would have left the hats out.

It looks very strange, but at the same time it's very aristic. You see, mystery solved

Most of the time I give an in depth description of my artworks but this time I let it out. I often see people post artworks here on Deviantart and the only discription they give is the list with credits. So sometimes I think "ah well, who cares what I have to say about my own work. Where the inspiration comes from, or to point out altered art that is mixed with my own ideas". While on the other hand I know that there is a group of people that is interested in these things. Sometimes it just breaks the motivation when you see people that keep drooling for the same type of artworks over and over again. Artist that don't even bother to talk about their work, inspiration etc. Or artists that don't say what moved them to create yet another artwork with some overused DA-stock.

Maybe that I'll edit the description, but I have to think about it. Thanks for the heads up (refering to the link). Take care

I think your work stands alone. I don't even think you do the same art as Maggie but the feeling of nostalgia is there, is what I meant. Or dreamlike. I love your use of brushes and whatever else you use to make your masterpieces, your art stands out.

I will say that this is true about artists not bothering to talk about their work. I sometimes will write something a poem or description because when I create something, I am saying something other than I can blend textures together yet I feel that it may be too personal or that some might not get it. And there are so many who just don't care about why you created something which is bothersome to me at times because sometimes art and words need to blend to tell the story that one might not see in the piece.

So DON'T edit your description. Stay original

Such beautiful work. The colours remind me of some of the more beautiful colour plates of watercolours you find in old children's books, so rich but gentle at the same time. Beautifully executed too.

I’m fascinated by this! These three little boys, bound together by their story ribbon, carry a somewhat eerie nuance of magic. The three roses on top of the hat appear to be unraveling and re-forming between two of the boys. Is it the unraveling of knowledge? Is it a wizard's hat or a dunce hat? The foremost boy has no hat – is it because he’s acquired enough knowledge and is now able to pass it on to the other two? They’re all in the process of being transformed by their reading, given the change from the original sepia to colour. Their location in a beautiful field of wildflowers (the third boy looks as if he’s about to fly off or vanish) suggest growth. A galaxy could be stretching out behind them.Could it be that all three need an accumulated amount of knowledge to become one unified being? It could be that I'm totally out to lunch about my interpretations but I’m thoroughly enjoying the process…

We become transformed by reading: lives and worlds unravel; we travel to other places and times. Your art certainly transports me to special places, and once more I thank you for it...

I can't believe there weren't enough people that wanted to be a part of this theme, but then it is Summer and a lot of people are gone on vacation.
ANYWAY I love the whole concept, I don't know HOW you keep coming up with 'em, and your skills are, as always, excellent!!
