From seeing The Thing after the new episode today, I can't scenes of that episode out of my head where Twi begins to split apart into horrid forms to absorb other ponies. For some reason, I feel like this would be the worst one, and I have no idea why!

I agree that it was too much, but it does a good job illustrating how serious Twi's anxieties about Celestia and her OCD/Asperger's symptoms can get. This fear of failure and imperfection is one of her demon's and a scary one at that. I think the animators got nostalgic for EE&E and Ren & Stimpy as well. They made a mistake in showing the freaky face so many times. A variety of different one might have been less jarring and more subtle. That thing in the episode deeply upset me, but I think it was effective at achieving what it set out to do. I think this episode was written to have a certain "feel" and future ones will not be like it, but explore other atmospheres, as the show did in Season 1. I agree, she is scarier.
Mayor vs. Derpy, Atomic Rainboom, Smarty Pants, E'nope, Kung-fu Chiropractic-shy, RD calling AJ boss, Bonbon's 3rd line, and the TRAIN more than make up for it. I suspect the next will be rather different, but just as awesome, if not better.
