Now this would have been a fun way to take the episode: "Spike the Battle Butler'.
The guy spends most of his free time trying to please and pamper Rarity, so it'd make sense for him to offer his talents to reward the most selfless, hard-working mare he knows. And rather than ignoring how he, a dragon, couldn't handle wooden foes, it could have become the main plot.
In return for his services, A.J. gives him fighting lessons to give his self-esteem a boost, though she encourages him to take his time growing-up into a badass...
Cue them both kicking Timberwolf flank as a team later anyway.

This episode was...well it doesn't make sense. Spike is useful when he works for Twilight, and I think he cleans from time to time in her study. For him to be worthless with Applejack doesn't make much sense.
