The title might be misleading, but the title is because of the time this story takes place.
The year is 1935, the Great Depression is upon the western world, gangsters run the cities of the United States. A jobless man named John Wiggins takes matters into his own hands and takes on a persona as a martial artist vigilante: Super Mario.

Main Characters

John Wiggins/Super Mario: An unemployed citizen of New York. A one time free lance newspaper reporter until he was layed off due to the Great Depression. Trained in martial arts and natural acrobatics since his youth, he prays on the guilty and the gangster underworld that harm the good. He takes on a persona of a plumber named Super Mario.
Jennie Nay-Yeong: A Korean immigrant who barely escaped the Japanese invasion. Not a day goes by where she doesn't think of her younger sister: Seoung-Mina who was kidnapped by the Japanese. Jennie quickly becomes smitten by Super Mario and keeps track of him in the newspaper.
Donald Trump/Bowser Koopa: By day, he's the head of Trumpcorp. By night, he's a ruthless leader of a powerful gang in New York. With his ruthless leadership skills, he's known in the gangster underworld as "The Koopa". Born with a strange skin defect (which looks scaly like that of a reptile), people considered him a freak, which led him to burden on anger and hatred for the normal society. As being a leader of both the economic world and the criminal underworld, he'll stop anybody who tries to knock him down from the top.
Jeff Crothers/Luigi: Another out-of-work man. Desperate for action, Jeff decides to take up martial arts from a Chinese immigrant in hopes to defeat the criminal underworld. Then, he finds out that he was (unknowingly) competing against Super Mario. Eventually they discover each other's identity and decide to fight together.

Wario: A star of a freak show in the Coney Island carnival. Eventually, he became fed up of people laughing at him, he decides to join the criminal underworld. Given a multitude of illegal medicine, Wario becomes a being of unimaginable strength. He eventually becomes an enemy of Mario.
Patricia Toadstool: A singer for a local Speakeasy. Her stage name is "Peach" as she's the "forced" girlfriend of a local gangster. Though, she's more smitten with the local hero: Super Mario. On more than a few occasions, Mario will have to rescue her, even from her gangster boyfriend.
Daisy Easton: Another Speakeasy singer. She's in competition with Patricia Toadstool to see who sings better, and to see who can impress Patricia's gangster boyfriend better as well. A tomboy, Daisy will stop at nothing to show that she's the best woman in New York.
Tifa Lockheart: A dancer at a local Cabaret. She's yet another woman smitten by Mario as she was attacked by gangsters when coming home one night and Mario rescued her.
B.J. Blazkowitcz: A young, eager U.S. Soldier. Enlisted as soon as he graduated High School, B.J. has been in the serivce for several years. He has helped explorers in their personal excavations around the world. At some point in the story, Mario helps B.J. escape from Castle Wolfenstein.
Rugal Bernstein: A ruthless Nazi executive. A part of the Third Reich Government, he serves Adolf Hitler. At some point in the story he travels abroad to Japan to discover a legendary spirit said to give humans a power of a god. He was granted this power and comes up with Operation: Valkyrie. A plan to assassinate Hitler.
Chun-Li: A female Shaolin monk who defected from her temple to work for the U.S. Government. Her father was killed by the Japanese as they begin to invade China, Chun-Li has revenge on her mind as she wants to fight against the Japanese. But as her Shaolin Masters said no, she defected to the United States in hopes to get her revenge. At some point in the story, she and Mario fight together, and as she discovers Mario's true identity. The 2 develop an on-again, off-again relationship.
Vega: A blood thirsty matador from Spain. Vega's pleasure is the pain of others and their blood. He joins the Nazi Third Reich in hopes to sate his bloodthirst. At some point in the story, he fights Mario and become bitter enemies.
