"Oliver Hewson!" Kate shouts at her son, who has wandered into her work room while she was putting on make-up for her night out with friends .

Her fury relents as she glares at him and he looks up with appealingly wide eyes. "I shouldn't be annoyed that you're taking an interest in books but your timing is not exactly right, little lad," she says. Oliver's cute smile quickly melts his mother's anger and she shakes her head as her own smile emerges.

The plan was to get ready first and then drop Oliver off at Aunt Sophia's . Any future plans of this sort will ensure Oliver is dealt with before Kate thinks about getting ready.

"And I see I'm gonna have to invest in some childproof gates or something to stop you wandering about the house," she says as she crouches down and begins picking up the books which Oliver has removed from the shelves.

Motherhood, she concludes, is a non-stop learning process.
