Description
Claire decides to postpone giving Cloverpatch a wash now that Holly and Xiulan have arrived at the stables. Instead, after seeing that Xiulan is quite nervous being around horses for the first time, she makes it her mission to get the quiet girl more comfortable in their presence.

"Xiulan," Claire says and Xiulan looks up at her, still maintaining a considered distance from Cloverpatch. "Go through that door there," she says while pointing to a doorway that is a standard door, not one of the many stabledoors surrounding the courtyard, "and just inside you should find a big tray of vegetables and fruit and stuff like that. Find a nice big carrot and come back and you can feed it to Clover, yeah?

Xiulan looks uncertainly at Claire and does not move, only her eyes glance over to the doorway in question.

Holly steps nearer to her girlfriend. "Go on, Xiu! Clover will love you for giving him a carrot, he really likes them. Give it a go, eh?"

Xiulan tightens her lips and stares at Holly for a few seconds in silent thought, weighing up what she should do. "Okay, Holly, I will try this for you," she eventually decides.

"You'll be doing it for you!" Holly laughs. "You'll get to see how awesome Cloverpatch is when he's been given a treat and you see how much he enjoyed it."

"Okay, if you are saying," Xiulan says with a sceptical tint to the smile she gives before turning and heading towards the door Claire indicated.

While Xiulan is retrieving the carrot, Claire's phone alerts her that she has received a message so she pulls it out of her pocket. "Oh, cool!" she says as she reads the text. "Nadia's arrived and she's waiting outside but she's not sure where to go. I'll pop out and get her, won't take a sec!" Claire exits the courtyard, leaving Holly to wait for Xiulan's return.

Which Xiulan does, holding a carrot and still wearing the same uncertain expression. "What now am I to do, Holly?" she asks. "I put it down and horse eats from the floor?"

Holly chuckles. "No, no! You hold it out and he takes it from your hand."

"Oh my!" Xiulan exclaims in alarm. "He will bite the fingers! This is perilous!"

Holly grins and puts a hand on Xiulan's shoulder, leaning in closer. It is moments like this, where Xiulan displays a charming innocence, that makes Holly's heart swell with love for her. "Only if you're not careful. Hold it out so he can see it and he knows it's for him, and then respond to how he approaches it with his mouth, watching how far down he wants to bite it and you should be able to avoid any nips on your fingers. Okay?"

Xiulan looks earnestly into Holly's eyes and, trusting what her girlfriend is telling her, nods with a tentative conviction. "I will do this, Holly," she says and turns to face Cloverpatch.
