Description
Out of the two groups, male and female, to enter their respective changing areas , Sven and Jake are ready first and they emerge from the changing room to see that their female relatives are not out yet. They stand beside the drinking fountains where they can see everyone entering and exiting the small lobby area that precedes the main water-park, and wait for Becca and Týra to join them.

Jake, in a change of character quite unlike the usually quiet young lad, is chatting with Sven the whole time and barely notices the time and the other people passing by, he is so caught up in talking to this older boy who is quickly becoming someone he really enjoys spending time with.

Jake is so engrossed in the conversation he is having with Sven that it takes a couple of prompts from his new-found friend for him to break off and notice that his mother and Týra (looking slightly different with her hair pulled up in a bun) are standing nearby.

"Oh, sorry!" he says as he sees the rest of his group are now present. "Hello, Týra! I like your hair like that. Sven was telling me all about the new Star Wars series that's supposed to be streaming in the autumn. He knows so much about Star Wars and lots of other cool things!" Jake looks up at Becca. "Hey, Mummy!" he says cheerily and gives her a small wave.

A small wave with his free hand, Becca notices, because the other hand is being held by Sven. He wouldn't be seen dead holding my hand out in public. Becca takes a moment to look at her son appraisingly. There's something different about him. He looks taller. Or perhaps he's standing straighter, more upright. And he looks so much happier. His eyes are brighter and his face is more animated. It's wonderful to see him looking so alive! Becca smiles, not just at how lovely Jake appears to her right now but how wonderful it is to see him connecting with someone so well. A small voice begins to emerge in the back of her mind, asking if it is his spending so much time with his twin sister that is a detriment to his well-being, how he needs to be free from Judy's domineering personality in order to blossom into his own and become a well-rounded young boy.

But she pushes the issue to one side for now. It can be addressed later. Right now, he is at a water-park and has some friends to have fun with.

"Hey, son," she greets him. "Was it okay getting changed with Sven? Are you two getting on okay?" she asks, although she can see that the answer will be a positive one just by looking.

"Oh, Mum!" Jake exclaims. "Sven's awesome! He knows so much about, like, everything, all the interesting stuff. I want to be just like him when I grow up!"

Sven mumbles something embarrassed and when Becca looks at his face (which is difficult for her to do when there is so much of the rest of him to look at as he stands there in his swimming trunks) she sees that he is blushing.

"I'm sure you do..." Becca says with a quick glance up and down Sven's well-sculpted physique, wondering if Jake is referring to all aspects of Sven or just his conversational topics. "Now, you kids go and have fun on the slides and everything and I'll be upstairs," she points upwards, indicating the deck above that serves as the seating for the water-park's café, "with a coffee and a book but I'll be keeping an eye on you. I'll sit in an obvious place where you can see me so if you need me for anything you'll know where I am. Are you okay with that?"

She looks at Jake and waits for him to nod and smile that this is acceptable, and then switches her attention to Týra, who has left her side and is now standing next to Jake with a huge grin on her face. Týra's smile widens and with a nod at Becca's query she grabs hold of Jake's free hand and pulls him away from her brother. "Come on, Jakey! I want to go on the slides but only if you're with me!" The two of them go scampering out of the lobby and into the main area of the water-park.

Becca finally turns to Sven and gives him a warm smile (with another quick glance at all the distractions he is presenting). "I see Jake likes you so I'll trust you to look after him moment to moment. But like I said, if you need me for anything, don't hesitate to shout or send for me, okay?"

"I understand, Mrs Edwards," Sven says with a nod of assurance. "Jake will have a good time, do not worry."

Sven turns and walks in the same direction that the two youngsters went a few seconds before, and Becca stands for a while enjoying the sight that this presents to her.

Stop it! she tells herself after Sven has gone from view. Young enough to be your son, Becs! Get some perspective.

She sighs and turns to head towards the stairs that will take her up to the mezzanine café.
