Description

Nadia gets up early and dresses for the good weather she sees outside.

She could barely sleep the night before, coming back from Mettleham Stables after spending almost the entire day there with Claire and being thoroughly thrilled and delighted to be around so many horses. She not only got to ride Cloverpatch once more, saw plenty of Midnight Mistress , the most beautiful black horse she has ever seen, she also met plenty of other horses as their owners turned up at the stables and tended to their animals. Most owners responded positively to Nadia's enthusiasm and were eager to let her pet and stroke their horses.

She was sorry when she had to call her father for a lift home but she secured a promise that she would be invited the next time Claire was at the stables, and this lifted her mood over the disappointment of leaving the horses behind.

On the drive home she could not stop talking about all the amazing things she had done that day and she came very close many times to outrightly demanding that her parents buy her a horse but she managed to keep the urge suppressed because she could guess what the reaction would be. Anyway... having Claire as a friend is almost as good as owning her own horse, after all, so this somewhat allayed her desire, but still... most of her dreams that night when she could sleep were of having a horse all to herself and what an incredible life that would be.

But before the next visit to the stables, there are still other things to be done. First and foremost is the party to celebrate both her recent 12th birthday and also completing her first year at St Tibb's. It will be taking place later today and Nadia is excited about seeing all of her friends from school all dressed up in their best. Yes, even Stinky Steadman , whom Nadia relented and handed an invitation to, accepting that it would be cruel to exclude her rather malodorous classmate (note: at this time Nadia is unaware that Nicola Steadman has possibly found an answer to her BO problem).

Only one obstacle remains, Nadia realizes, and that is Lee Tegwald, the older boy she has developed feelings for that she wishes could be pushed to one side and ignored. But such feelings will not be so easily dismissed! When she is not thinking about horses and what an amazing place Mettleham Stables is, she finds her thoughts drifting back to Teggsy and the impulse that has taken hold of her that she should invite him to her party. He might refuse, he might have other things already arranged, he might even laugh at her offer and choose to insult her over it, but she has to try. And if he accepts... !

Armed with her phone and earpods for entertainment, and an avocado Jilberry Bar for when she gets peckish later on, she makes her way downstairs, out the front door, and sits on the bench facing the street in the hope that Teggsy will walk by. Unlike the past two mornings on which she did this (and was either disappointed after a whole day of waiting or had to abort her vigilance early in order to get to the stables), this morning she is feeling confident, having had a perfectly splendid day yesterday full of horses.

He will walk by today, of course he will!
