Description
[Previous entry in the No Uniform Friday story. ]Nadia waves to Leigh-Anne as her friend is driven away. Neither girl mentioned the cruel punishment handed out by Miss Yarborough earlier in the day lest Leigh-Anne's mother begin another rant about dressing inappropriately. With her grandmother's vintage dress covering up the bikini quite well when worn, Leigh-Anne looks set to keep everything a secret from her parents, her mother in particular.
Nadia then walks to the bus stop where she waits for her bus. Nothing eventful happens on the journey home, and Nadia's mind is full of the images of the spectacles that took place in the school grounds as part of the celebration of the last afternoon of the school year. She cannot remember being more entertained and wishing that time would stand still so that she could enjoy everything for as long as possible.
She gets off at her stop and walks a few streets to where her house is. As she is approaching it, she hears footsteps behind her and then a voice calling out: "Ha-hah! Look who's come back home!"
Nadia recognizes the voice instantly and it fills her with a mixture of conflicting feelings. Primarily, she braces herself for some cringeworthy insults and comments thrown at her by the annoying older boy who now passes by her house every morning on his way to school. But, conversely, she also feels glad that their paths have crossed at this moment and she finds herself looking forward to hearing some more of his lame attempts to poke fun at her.
She stops and turns, waiting for the boy to get nearer. "Yeah? And?" she says. "At least I've got a home."
The boy scoffs and walks closer. "What's that s'posed to mean then?" he says as he comes to a halt a couple of metres from Nadia.
It occurs to both of them that this is the closest they have been since their morning encounters began, and this proximity adds to a weight that they can both feel forming in the air between them.
Nadia lifts her shoulders in a nonchalant manner. "Well... every time I see you, you're hanging around out here in my street. Perhaps you're homeless or something... ?" She lets a very small smirk play on her face and hopes that the boy picks up on it and realizes she is not being too serious.
He laughs, not unkindly. "Really? You thought I was living out on the streets? Are you even real?"
"Very real!" Nadia replies and raises her hand out towards the boy. "Feel how real I am!"
An uncomfortable expression appears on the boy's face as he stares at Nadia's outstretched hand and he turns the offer, and the implications behind accepting it, over in his mind. "Uh... um... I, uh... I believe you, don't worry," he says with far less bravado than he had previously been boasting.
There is a moment of very awkward silence with both parties deciding to look at the patch of ground in front of them, neither feeling comfortable looking at each other directly. Nadia lowers her arm and wishes she were wearing trousers so she could casually slide the offending hand into a pocket. She had not just tried to initiate some form of physical contact with this boy, had she? Absolutely not!
"So... uh..." the boy mumbles nervously, "like... um... are you... you know, like, going anywhere nice this summer?" He shrugs stiffly.
Nadia blinks a few times and looks up at his face only to see that he is still averting his gaze. "No, nowhere..." she says, unsure whether she wants to get into such trivial small talk out here on the street right now but not wishing for the conversation to end so suddenly. "We're... we're staying here." She pauses and again the silence feels heavy and awkward. "It's my birthday in a few days' time, did you know!" Nadia suddenly blurts out. She is not sure why she said this but it feels better to have done so than face the ominous void of words that had threatened to form again.
"A birthday? Really?" the boy says. He raises his eyes to look at Nadia, head still lowered. "So... uh... how old will you be?"
"Twelve," Nadia replies.
"That's cool. Are you, like, having a party or a..." he shrugs again, "... whatever?"
A sly smile creeps onto Nadia's face. "Oh yes, a whatever! I'm going to have a whatever!"
The boy's head jerks up and he looks directly at Nadia, head tilted to one side in an assessing attitude. It is obvious he is trying to determine how to take her response and how to reply to it. The two of them stare at each other intently, both weighing up the other and attempting to work out what exactly is happening here. Only a few seconds previously for either of them to look the other straight in the eye was difficult, if not impossible; now they both have their gaze locked on each other and it feels it would be just as difficult to look away.
"Uh... well... I hope you have a nice whatever for your birthday," the boy finally says and briefly looks away, breaking the spell that was holding them.
"I will!" Nadia smiles and is taken by a sudden thought in which she realizes that the boy might start angling for an invitation to her birthday celebrations. He might not, of course, but she feels his approach up to it will be even more awkward than the conversation so far and it would be best to avoid even the slightest attempt so she quickly turns to begin the last few steps to her front door. However, before she can begin, she hears the boy speak again: "I'm Lee, by the way. Lee Tegwald." He pauses and then adds: "But you can call me Teggsy."
Nadia turns her head to look back at Teggsy. "I'm Nadia. Nadia Swinley. And, uh... well... you can call me Nadia, I guess."
Teggsy chuckles. "Okay, Nadia. Maybe, like, I'll, uh... seeya 'round, yeh?" he says with an uplift at the end adding a note of hopefulness to his question, and he begins walking in the direction Nadia associates with where he usually approaches her from on a morning.
Nadia, meanwhile, pulls the front-door key out of her bag and unlocks the door. She cannot help smiling to herself as she does so, hoping that she will indeed see him around over the coming weeks and will not have to wait for school to resume in September before doing so.
