"Place your hands firmly on him, Nadia. Feel his muscles and how strong he is. He can easily deal with your weight as long as you don't grab his mane or his saddle and pull either one," Claire advises as Nadia stands at the top of the mounting block and lifts her left foot up into the stirrup. "It'll hurt him a lot if you pull at his mane with all your weight behind it so don't even let the thought of grabbing it enter your head, okay?"

Nadia giggles excitedly and nods that she understands what Claire is telling her. She can barely believe that she is now pressed up close to a real horse and in a few minutes will be riding him.

After Claire had taken Nadia inside Cloverpatch's stall and picked up a helmet and placed it on Nadia's head (thankfully it fit okay with a small adjustment to the chin strap), she had then led Nadia back outside and gone to find a stablehand to assist with getting Cloverpatch's saddle and bridle fitted along with a mounting block for little Nadia easier access to the stirrups. It took a short while for everything to be prepared but with it now done, Nadia is beyond excited.

"Lean into him a little and put your right hand over and around so you can place it on his other side," Claire instructs Nadia. "Again, don't be tempted to grab the saddle, even though there's lots of convenient things to hold on to. He... his body, his torso... is not going to move, if at all, not nearly as much as the saddle will slip and slide if you grab it now and try to pull yourself up onto his back. Always place your hand---both hands---on Cloverpatch himself when you're getting on. You follow?"

Nadia nods eagerly and does as Claire is telling her, stretching her right arm across Cloverpatch's back and feeling his warmth and potential strength under her hand.

"Okay... now lean a little to your left, putting a little bit of weight on your left foot, the one in the stirrup, and get ready to push yourself up with your right foot and swing your leg all the way over. Ready?" Claire asks, watching carefully. She knows from experience that this manoeuvre was tricky and slightly scary the first few times she tried it so she strokes Cloverpatch on the forehead and whispers a few comforting words to him to soothe him down for Nadia's first attempt. The younger girl, despite being giggly and obviously excited, has so far followed the instructions to the letter so Claire feels this will go fine.

"I'm ready, Claire!" Nadia laughs nervously with huge anticipation as she waits for Claire's go-ahead so she can actually get onto Cloverpatch's back.
