Description
Hey guys! Here is the latest steampunk monster that I've been working on. Sorry the photo quality isn't the best, it was a bit dark for my camera's liking!) It was originally a Nerf Vulcan and with a few minor modifications I think it will make a very nice prop for anyone looking to work out their arm muscles, haha!
There's still quite a bit more to do, but I thought you guys might enjoy seeing some progress. Let me know what you think and I always appreciate input (no design elements ever set in stone!)
Thanks for checking it out and Merry Christmas to all my friends here on dA

That's air-cooled and this will be water-cooled, so no holes...hopefully, haha

THAT is how to mod a gun for steampunk! Looking fantastic, Mr. J! Can't wait to see how this puppy turns out.

What a monster! My only thing is thinking "should a giant machine gun like this have a scope? Or does it matter?" Besides that I like Tophoo's suggestion with the gray part at the end, even though I'm sure you have a plan for it already. Also, is this a gun gun, or an arm-mounted deal?

The gun has a tripod that can be used with the scope, but I'm not going to say that it wouldn't just look cool even without a stock...but I am making a stock for it, haha. That's the only bad thing about progress photos, but I still appreciate the input and feedback regardless. This is being done as a modular design to allow parts to be added or removed as needed. I liked the idea of being able to swap out parts to give the gun a different feel depending on the use or situation

See, I knew you had a plan for it haha
Sounds like this is going to be a 'one-of-a-kind' piece that everybody wants a commission of, including me (if I had money for things)
Modular things are always more fun, customizing is great but when the custom stuff is made for it and switchable...over the top~

eh, yeah- if it doesn't have a stock, there's no real way to use a scope. I'm with you on that.

It does have a tripod base, however

Looking slick! I'm a bit over the whole steampunk thing myself, but this is a nice piece, regardless.
More than anything, I'd recommend doing something with the cooling jacket (on the barrel).
A lot of old-school machine guns were water cooled- maybe ding up the jacket a bit, add rust/corrosion/verdigris/tarnish spots and/or streaking where the cooling system has leaked..
Maybe a small hose to a coolant reservoir.
Just a couple of thoughts.

Thank you for the feedback! The water jacket is still early in the process, so it'll be receiving some water-related damage before it's done. The plumbing hose will be on the opposite side by the water canister which was a good thing to point out based on just the info in the photo I hope you'll let me know what you think when it's all done!

One other thought- the copper plumbing off the side might be a bit much.

never too much! ok, maybe sometimes, haha. Let me get it finished and I'd like to see what your thoughts are. It needed to flare out a bit to give room for the ammo belt, but the piping isn't fixed in place, just in case I need to make some changes to the design

Fair enough- I can see where it'd work as a guard for the belt & feed tray.

that's quite the monster you have there... i wonder if it will still work once done....
(sorry! bad english there)

JohnsonArmsProps In reply to halconfenix [2013-12-20 01:45:01 +0000 UTC]
haha, it's just intended as a prop or display piece, but it's ok because I saved a dead nerf gun from the scrap heap and hopefully it'll have a second life as a primadonna piece of art
