Description
Another DMV picture.America Jones once again, this time with a slightly altered uniform.
Seeing how actual meter maids were day-glo vests at present, I thought I'd try one out on our heroine. The low belt, bike pants were suggested by so I thought I'd try them for a spin. It's been a while since I designed AJ's uniform, so I thought I might try to freshen up the look.
You'll note here AJ's PTD is in transit between her hand and its holster. I always loved the old Galaxy Ranger cartoon and how the straps on their holsters would pop open on command. I thought it would be cool if the entire holster opened up and somehow "magleved" the PTD to its user.
On more note, to facilitate this unhinging action I made a slit running down the side of the holster, similar to the ones the Colonial Warriors used in the original Battlestar Galactica. Yea, I know--I'm putting wayyy too much thought into this.
The robot in front of AJ is a Roboot, and semi-autonomous device that attaches itself to the tires of cars with delinquent parking tickets. This little critter is one of two, carried in integrated housing in AJ's Light Floating Transport or LiFT.
Though suited to fill the role of spunky sci-fi robot, Roboots are regarded with unqualified dread by the average commuter.

It looks so modern. Unlike so many other designs, this one actually looks plausibly futuristic.
...yes, even the bike shorts.

Actually,I love it when artists put a lot of thought and art aspects into the stuff they're working on,at least if they cared enough to explain them like you do. C: Lets me learn a lot of things.Love the holster concept.

Gotta admit, I love that too. Half the fun of appreciating a good work of art is in learning precisely how the artist arrived at the particular decisions--why'd they use a certain angle? What compositions they tried and discarded, and why? What previous works or unrelated objects influenced their vision.
Learning the process whose result is a favored image is oftentimes as enjoyable as the image itself.
I can't stand it when artists put ellipses in their artists comments. If I were running things, a deviation would not post until an artist typed a minimum of 25 words in their artist comments. Of course, if one forces the issue, folks'll probably do passive/aggressive junk like typing "One, two, three, four..." and so on.
Oh well.

The premise of the Roboot is hilarious. I can just imagine motorists kneeling by their parked cars and pleading with the Roboot to let them go just this once.
Can they curl up and roll like destroyer droids?

I'm always impressed by your ability to connect an article of clothing with a certain era. I've think we've discussed before that I can do that with cars, but I'm lost with women's fashion.
Between you, me, the keyboard, and probably a lurker or two, the primary focus of my attention were women's fashion is concerned is what part of the body is shown off.

Oh hey cool! I'm not the ONLY person in the world who remembers the old Galaxy Rangers!! Still end up humming the danged theme song these days... >.< As for the holster, that is a wicked idea, tho it reminds me a little of the Patlabor robots design, where the leg panel would open up and lift up the pistol right into the hand (Tho more mechanical).
As for the bot there... is it just me or does the disk shape remind you of the "saucer" section of the Enterprise? O.o

Galaxy Rangers was possibly the best adventure cartoon ever. Certainly the best of the 1980's.
It was basically "Firefly: The Animated Series".
Zachary Fox was like Mal. Telepathic Niko () was like River, and Doc Hartford was their Book. (Actually, he's more like how I'd imagine Zoe and Wash's son turning out, now that I think of it. And River had more than a little of genetic super-weapon Shane thrown in, but you get the picture.
)
Of course to me, Rangers corrects what in my mind is Firefly's greatest flaw--lack of bad ass space fighters.
Both show even got canceled after one season. Too cool for TV I guess.
You really seem hung up on detail. Let me ask you. Are you saying that the sources you are citing give you the impression that fundamental skills like anatomy and perspective are unimportant?
You say that they look for detail first. Do you believe that they don't look for the fundamentals at all?

Unfortunately I never caught Firefly when it was out, but I managed to get hold of the collected series on DVD< so I plan to correct that in the near future.
However I agree. Plus you gotta admit that intro was just awesome. Makes me wish that the animation in the episodes was as good as the stuff in the opening. Plus they seemed to set up in the first episode or two a serious over-arching storyline... then it was like someone said that was too serious for a kiddie show and made them lighten the tone way up.
Rangers had a lot of potential, but it was like the developers and the producers had different visions of what direction it was going to develop in. It would have been interesting if they'd been willing to take the risk and keep it slightly more mature methinks. Maybe then we'd have figured out exactly what Goose was... or not. O.o

There were two episodes that had animation on par with the opening: Psychocrypt and Sundancer. I'm always disappointed by Sun Dancer, because it was the second half of a two-parter and all the cool violence happened in part one.
Part two was about a horse race. An awesomely animated horse race, but still... At least we'll always have Psychocrypt.

I must've missed those. But then the local station as playing them at an obscene time and in no particular order (Which means they kept showing the same couple over and over again). Always wished that series had lived up to it's potential... But then, Firefly is a sort of spiritual successor I suppose of the whole "Cowboys in space" theme.

Thanks.
I was going to have the Roboot scuttle around on all fours like a crab (Or a really fast turtle. ), and it still can--but for the purposes of this pin-up, it would've ended up just looking like a footstool.
Rearing the thing up on its hind legs allowed me to give it some degree of personality.
Movies huh? Hmmm, the girl who played the kid sister in "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" should be just about the right age now. [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Mauser712 In reply to JohnStaton [2010-07-31 19:54:32 +0000 UTC]
Science Fiction Folk song. (Actually, they aren't necessarily Folk, but the term was born of a Typo in a WorldCon program book many moons ago.) More famous examples would be that Star Wars song that Weird Al did, but any SF Con worth it's salt has a Filking circle late at night.
So if I re-did the lyrics to that song and made it about robotic parking boots, that would be a Filk. Singing it would be Filking, and it would make me a Filker.
(Oddly, Irish music is also popular among filkers. Must be all the blood and battles, and Elves and Fae folk.)
