Description This is Lawrence Brecker, an officer / sign painter (he does not get paid well) for a mid-sized town somewhere in the uh, west. He lives in his office at his station, with his bed situated just above his desk. His mom makes fun of him, but he is grateful that she still sends him food even though he is 30.

The thing he is holding in this picture is his Horse. It has zero horsepower. Its main function is to reduce travel friction by floating off the ground while the driver and passengers push along with their legs. So yes, it is essentially a hoverboard in the form of a stick horse. It hovers passively by some sort of magical imagination, and originally belonged to a friend who used to cart ice cream around town with it. In order to attract customers, the horse head plays musical tunes while it moves.

This makes law enforcement a little awkward.

I had not drawn a dude for a while, and I had not drawn a Western pic for even longer (my memory tell me it has been approximately never), so Lawrence here meets both quotas. Designing him was kind of fun, and at the same time a challenge.

I struggled a bit with his hair. Originally his bangs were longer, but I felt it was a bit too...cheap. I said to myself, "Don't be such a thoughtless artist, relying on some sort of formula that says Long Hair = Cool." So I cut his bangs a little shorter and gave him a ponytail. Oh I am genus.

His poncho combines with his sideburns to make him moar manly. Also, it is inspired by a little girl 's poncho.

He also has no hat. My brother says that kind of defeats the whole purpose of a Western, and I guess he's kind of right. But I don't like how a hat looks on him, so I am going to say that all he can find are lady hats.

Made in Flash

EDIT: I'm going to answer a couple of the more frequently asked questions here:

1) Why not put a hat on a string around his neck?
- I'm not going to give him a hat if I don't like how it'll look on him, even if he's not wearing it at the moment.

2) Why does he have spurs on his gloves?
- So he can put his elbows on the ground and use them like tiny wheels.

3) I like his zipper
- That is his officer's tag. And his shirt uses Velcro.

4) What are those things in the background?
- Those are ice cream base stations. Ice cream is pivotal to the West's economy.
- Or they might be clouds, depending on what you're talking about.

Thanks! I'll try a little harder on the background next time. Or not at all! Who knows?

Being a musician, the first thing that popped out to me was the little set of notes there. I've got perfect pitch, so I hummed it out and I thought it sounded like "You Are My Sunshine" (and the omake confirmed it, lol). It's missing bar lines, but most people wouldn't know that, and given that it's only five notes, that's nothing major.

The background is really lovely and soft, and I like the details of the towers in the distance. With the coloring you used, it gives a really good impression of the haze caused by extreme distance. Also, because the background is minimalistic, it doesn't detract from the brave western officer/sign painter or his hover-horse. At the same time, it's just detailed enough.

Lawrence Brecker's clothing is unique, but still has a western flair to it (and the big metal tag/zipper thingy amuses me greatly), and the spurs on his bracers are certainly...interesting(/potentially painful). His gun is so large that it would have to be extremely heavy, but I already decided that he's either much stronger than he looks, has a cybernetic arm, the gun's made of some super-light metal/alloy, and/or any combination of the above. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

If there's any downside to this picture, I would say that it's the lack of a nice, stereotypical cowboy hat. That is partly because I'm partial to them myself, and partly because he would need something to shield his eyes and face from the bright, hot, desert sun. However, I'm somewhat glad he doesn't have one on, as it might detract from his ruggedly handsome face. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)" /> Since there seems to be some wind, perhaps showing it having just blown off his head would be good, or perhaps blowing back while the string/strap underneath is holding onto his neck (was that clear?).

Also, the choice of colors is very nice, lending itself well to the theme of a desert. Lovely piece. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod" />

Thanks!

I did not stop to think about the weight of the gun. You are right, it is probably quite heavy, despite being very short (it ends pretty much at the bottom of the picture). Let's say he has sufficient arm strength to wield it.

Just when I thought you'd been hired to work on a new Trigun series...

It's beautiful, and this would fit right into that universe - right down to the vague silhouettes of rotting technological hulks in the far distance. As well as the perfectly captured painted desert (anime style).

I like the hover-horsey. A lot. It's simplicity almost makes you think he made it himself. But it could be a bit more "roughly" constructed to enhance that idea were it of any interest.

The real hallmark of quality in an image like this (for my purposes) is there never being a moment where you scratch your head and say to yourself "but why...". And that never happened here. It's completely natural.

I would read the manga, watch the anime, whatever.
Well done.

Thanks!

Hover-horse technology is complicated stuff, though, so I wouldn't think he'd be able to make it on his own. But along those lines, I probably could have tried a little harder to make it at least look like it used to be an ice cream horse.

And with all that blowing desert dust, a bit of wear and tear might not go amiss either.

Still, An excellent piece.

If the horse weren't there I would have sworn that it were just a "normal" western picture (anime twist included). I should know better seeing that it is, of course, from *JohnSu .
The colors are smooth, as usual, but have a warm feel to them.
Your character design is unique and gives him a very "fantasy" style. The hover-horse is the best idea, and I can imagine him speeding through the desert like a scene out of Star Wars.
The actual horse design is what's lacking in the picture. It looks like there wasn't a lot of thought put into the design and more and more was added on. Nothing wrong with this, but it seems too out of place. I think the lack of dimension on the horse head is what doesn't sit right when I look at it.

All in all, a great picture and a better idea. I wonder how lame the hover-horse's music would sound....

JohnSu In reply to MichaelLinkJr [2009-04-16 01:42:23 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I don't quite see where the horse fails or how it has no dimension/design, but I'll think on it.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

MichaelLinkJr In reply to JohnSu [2009-04-16 01:59:55 +0000 UTC]

It seems flat. I don't think I worded it right...

But since the picture itself is of your cowboy to the side, I can see both of his ears but the mouth is 2D. The perspective seems a bit off.

A pose that is only to the side might look unnatural, but having a mechanical horse head that was highly detailed with the perspective might make it out of place. It's a catch 22 when having two different designs. I don't mean to sound like I'm rambling, but it's hard trying to explain something that I feel.

Wow! I absolutely love this piece.

The folds and lighting looks totally natural, though in some places the folds and wrinkles look a little overdone or unnatural(say, for example, his left arm is overdone a tad, and his left shoulder confuses me just a little, the way it folds and lies on his arm) But that's a minor flaw, and probably the only one I could ever find.

You've pulled off the "warm" look very well, and the sandy colors really draw me in. I can almost feel the hot sun.

The horse, I think, is both a clever idea, and a really nice twist. It, as well as the large forms in back, give it a nice touch as well as a new storyline that the audience can think about.

God, I love your designs so much. The ponytail/shorter bangs idea was a good one, as well as adding in sideburns. He looks tough, alright.

I don't have much else to say except that I love this piece. Great job!

Lowrance (That's his name, right?): I think you did a great job on him and cutting his bangs shorter was a wise choice. I also like the stubble he's going on there. The color scheme you made for him is great! It gives him a western feel, so you don't really need the hat. The folds in the clothing are gorgeous along with the shading and lighting of the folds! I also think you did a really nice job on the gun too, they can be tricky.

I love his hoverhorse! A very original idea. I think you did very well on the lighting and shading and the design is pretty cool so I give you thumbs up there.

Background: The background is beautiful, you picked out the right colors to show that it was a desert environment having warm colors in the front and cool colors in the back. The way you put shadows on the clouds is amazing too!

Over all I really like this piece and I think you did a fantastic job!
