Description
Colored Pencils on Bristol Vellum. I also used some older markers that were kind of dried out for some of the subdued colors.20x10 inches.
Military version of one of the most beautiful aircraft of all time. President Eisenhower's Air Force One was a civilian version of this aircraft. It was called "Columbine II".
I have quite a bit of time in this. I started it before Christmas and lost track of how many hours.

Hello John, I've just added your Connie to my favourites, I had the pleasure if getting into the 'cabin' of one, some years back (too many to be honest)! When it came to the UK, your picture captures the beautiful but purposeful stance of this classic aircraft.

Thanks, Colin.
I am just old enough to remember when General Eisenhower was President of the US. The US Government used this type of aircraft for Air force.
What kind of shape was the aircraft you were in ?
Thank you so much for your kind words. I enjoy your work . You are very talented.
The Formula One season starts in less than a month !

Hi John
It was some years back now, but 'my' Connie, was in good condition, she had done a few airshows over here, before I saw and went on her at Biggin Hill, I can't even remember what her colour scheme was. I'll trawl back through my old photo's and try to find it.
I have to admit I don't take much interest in current F1, I used to go to lots of GP's in the early 70's, but when all my hero's stopped driving, and all the cars started to look the same, I lost the urge. But I still like to go to Le Mans. But even that has changed a lot over the years. Cheers Colin

Hi Colin,
I hear you about Formula One. We get it here on American Television but the racing I enjoy really is Indycar. My brother and his wife and boys go with my wife and I to the Indianapolis 500. The actual racing is fantastic. It is fun to watch the people that see the cars go green at the beginning of the race for the first time. I am not trying to sell any one on anything, but if this doesn't raise the hair on the back of you neck, nothing will. I have watched the race my whole life on TV, but the first time I saw them go green and come flying down that very narrow track, I was afraid for those drivers. I think this race might have lost its luster with the general public, but the racing has never been better.
Getting back to Formula One, the technology is much higher than the Indy Cars, but the actual on the track racing is very predictable. Plus with so many races in Asia they are in the middle of the night for us here in the States.
Take care,
John

Hello John,
Hope fully by now you have received an Email with my Connie photo's in it, I've been looking at videos on U tube of Connies in action, what a graceful aircraft.
The stories I have about my trips to GP's, when I talk to 'current F1 fans they can't believe it! And the prices, the cost of attending GP's now is astronomical (like everything else in the UK). The first GP I went to was the 1970 German GP (Hockenheim) the cost of the coach trip was £9 ! The most I ever paid was for the 1972 Italian GP that trip was £31, i'll have to leave the $ conversion to you. Back then you could get to the Indy 500 from here for £199! Now for me to attend Le Mans for the weekend is just over £300 that includes a pit grandstand place.
Oh well times do change I guess? Later, Colin

That is an interesting bit of information, Colin. Thanks.
I looked up the results of the 1970 German Gran Prix just for the nostalgia.
Those prices.....they probably wouldn't pay for your parking if you drove there.
We sit in the front grand stand at Indianapolis and the ticket situation is such that you get to see some of the same people year after year. One of the couples talked about attending the US Gran Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. Where as at Indy you can get a pretty good seat on the covered grand stand for $100, at Texas they spent $600 per ticket and their seats weren't that good.
So what do you do.
Nice chatting with you,
John

Amazing John. You have a great combination of artistic and technical skills. Love it. Next up, an Apollo Spacecraft maybe? That would be cool.

Thanks Cliff.
I kind of planned this out and decided that I wasn't going to draw the complete aircraft. I practiced drawing the fuselage with the colors and dark and light highlights. I have a new LED magnifying light that I really like. I don't think I would have attempted this one with out it. Thanks for the suggestion of an Apollo Spacecraft. You never know. Before I start a drawing I have to have something I see or want to try to do and I have to be inspired to then try it. Some times I will look at a photo or an idea that I have looked at 100 times and in that 101st time I will see something that will motivate me. What that will be, no one knows.
Thanks !

Amazing work! for a while, I thought it seems like an old colored picture such as published 1950s then I read "colored pencils".....lines,shades, shadows and shining effects are awesome.
I loved it, great work.
