Description
This was the picture I saw in an old Avon brochure all those year ago, the one that fascinated me and started my obsession with Siamese twins. The picture was for a product line called Perfect Balance, which was a skin care line for either oily or dry skin. I had been looking for this picture for years, and I ordered a lot of brochures, and this picture was on the cover of one of them. The text at the bottom was added by me, and was from the cover of the brochure for the campaign where the Perfect Balance line was introduced(1974, campaign 7). The picture was pretty much what I remembered, although they have a certain quiet, dignified beauty I didn't really grasp back when I first saw the picture back in 1974(I was 4 at the time, and didn't really grasp such concepts). I realize this might be a long shot, but if anyone has any information about the models in this picture, such as whether they were really joined, or how they made them appear to be joined, please either send me a note or reply in the comment section.EDIT(21 April, 2014): I made some changes to the file, I used photo editing software to enhance the picture(making it brighter, making the colors more vivid), and I slightly changed the text.

Thanks... I was almost surprised to find it myself... I found an auction for a lot of 16 Avon catalogs from the mid 1970s on eBay, and when I saw the photo of the lot, I saw the picture on the cover of one of them(I remember the pic being inside, but not on the cover...)... although it was too small to really see anything, I knew that was the picture I was looking for, and damn near had a cross between a heart attack and an adrenaline rush... I put in my bid, and when I found I was the winning bidder, and paid for it, that was one of the longest weeks of my life... When I finally got the package, and held the catalog with the pic on the cover in my hot little hand, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning...

ahhmmm...
you know,i think this is made with photoshop. They simply took a picture of a woman in a bandana and mirrored it.
but i'm not sure.

I know for a fact it wasn't done with Photoshop, this picture was taken from an Avon brochure from 1974, before Photoshop was created. . . And I'm pretty sure it wasn't mirrored, and that there are actually 2 women in that picture, if you look closely, there are several subtle differences(the most noticeable one, IMHO, is that one is slightly taller than the other). . . My best guess is they either used identical twins, or found 2 women who were very similar in appearance, put the bandanna on them, and used airbrushing to make them appear to be joined. . . Of course, you could also consider the(extremely unlikely) possibility Avon(or whoever produced their brochures, or photographed the models for the brochures) actually found a pair of Siamese twin sisters who were joined back to back. . . Of course, back when I first saw that picture, I didn't really think about how they did it(I was 4 at the time), I just assumed they were born like that. . . All I know for sure is that the picture was taken from a catalog that predates the creation of Adobe Photoshop. . .

You're very welcome. . . I really would like to find out myself how they did that, made those(like I said, there are several subtle differences between the women, which is why I believe there actually are 2 women in that picture, as opposed to a single woman being mirrored, but I digress. . . ) appear to be joined, my best guess would involve makeup, a prosthesis, airbrushing, or some combination thereof. . . All I know for sure is the picture was taken in either late 1973 or early 1974, and the brochure came out in the early part of 1974, so they didn't have the resources back then like they have today. . . Oh well, somebody might know how they did it(I would be very pleasantly surprised if I heard from one(or both)of the women who appeared in the picture). . .

S'okay. . . I guess it will have to remain a mystery. . . At least now, I have a tangible reminder that it really existed, and I didn't just "make it up in my head". . .

Anywho, thanks for commenting. . . There are times I wonder what it would have been like to have been born joined to someone. . . That picture had something to do with that. . .
