Description
Inspiration: Sebkhet de Sidi El Hani, Tunisia
The Sebkhet de Sidi El Hani is a salt lake in the Sousse Governorate of Tunisia. In ancient times, there was a roman town in Sidi El Hani called Quartz Augustus. This town was active from 30BC to 640AD. There is the remains of an amphitheatre there.
When drawing inspiration from this landscape, I got the sense of a man and an elephant fountain. I would later find out about Augustus, and that coins had been minted in his name that showed his image on one side and an elephant on the other.
Reading more about Augustus and elephants, I came across reference to a Roman form of entertainment, which would occur in the amphitheatres. It was known as the Venatio, the hunting, where wild animals would be hunted and killed for entertainment. In the time of Augustus, 3500 elephants were said to have met their fate this way.
