Wow this is an excellent piece of work the blue of chihiro's eyes is amazing. It's like she's staring right at you, and it locks you in. All I have to say about her is the chest area, I think, is slightly over emphasised and could have been brought down slightly after all she is just a child.. Haku is extraordinary especially the gold of his eyes I don't like to correct people but it would have been even more effective if you had done him looking back at chihiro as if he's watching over her which kind if shows the story in the picture and shows the role of his character. But over all the contrast and colour and the characters are just completely amazing I think it might be the best I've seen by far

Your fanart is beautifully rendered and has amazing detail and emotional impact!
However, I gotta say... I don't think the characters look true to their ethnic backgrounds. Chihiro here, to me, looks Chinese or Korean, where she is certainly Japanese... and I noticed San, in your other painting, looked east Asian.
I wonder if this is intentional, or if perhaps it is because of your references.
I do like the chinese-style dragon prints on San's clothes, so I can see why you might make her look Chinese.
I also love the colors you chose for this piece. The dramatic lights and darks really fit the mood.

Is there a legitimate 'ethnic' look separating Korean from Japanese, outside of clothes and posture?

Definitely the shape of their faces, but mostly the eyes, comes into play when speaking about these three nations.
It's a little hard to describe -for me anyway- but when you look long enough you get to notice the (actually quite obvious) differences between Japanese, Korean and definitely the Chinese. And in this painting Chihiro looks closer to Zhang Ziyi then she does to say ... Hikaru Utada.

Excellent, excellent work! Your attention to detail and use of mark-making techniques to create texture is fantastic. It's clear that you spent lots of time on the details in Haku's fur; Chihiro's eyes, hair, and clothing; and the moon's features (and btw, the birds are a lovely touch). Also, the light/dark contrast in your piece is nearly flawless. The darker areas in the background and on the characters emphasize the lighter areas without overdoing it, and the amount of dark in the image balances the light so that the image as a whole is neither blindingly bright nor oppressively dark. I also really like how you used the little orange lights as subtle backlighting, because it adds further dimension to the characters.
Compositionally, your piece is again excellent. Chihiro and Haku fill the frame without crowding it, and neither of them feels awkwardly cropped. I *love* how Chihiro's bright blue eyes are staring directly at the viewer, serving as a focal point for the piece. Positively stunning.
Now, for the nitpicky bits: I think the piece would've been even more compelling if Haku's eye was looking backward at Chihiro, which would both add to the story you're telling in this picture and serve to draw the viewer's eye even more strongly to Chihiro's face. Also, the brightness of Chihiro's chest area slightly detracts from the focus on her face. While realistically the same amount of light falls on both areas, to draw more attention to her face artistically try toning down the brightness on her chest and arms (and maybe even the part of Haku's body on that side of the piece) ever, ever so slightly. Also, it feels like the hair on Chihiro's left side is a little bit too fluffy, but that's me being especially picky. And lastly, I know that drawing hands and fingers is really tricky, but I feel like for the amount of time and effort you put into making the rest of your lines so clean, the ones outlining Chihiro's fingernails and the last few digits of her fingers are a tad rough.
Overall, amazing piece! I can't wait to see what you'll create next. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/bโฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="

Haha, first critique so forgive me if I tumble over any boundaries.
I want to start off saying that I absolutely love this picture! The colors, the light and dark contrasts, they way you manipulate that contrast either by softening the fade from dark to light or otherwise, it's absolutely amazing. As well, I love how you draw the eyes of your characters, it breathes life into the picture.
Now, there are a few things I want to touch on, one is her left limb. To me it seems like her left hand has no strength in it (left in Chihiro's point of view). On the other hand, perhaps you intended to draw her with her left hand gently placed on her arm. As well, her left elbow could use some more shadow to give the arm more depth.
Second point might actually purely just be me being biased, but I don't feel you've completely captured Chihiro (at least what I put her to be) in this drawing. Not saying your version isn't completely mind-blasting-ly awesome, but I when I look at Chihiro I see a young, naive, foolish, clumsy, and hard working girl. I see your version as a young, naive, not- so foolish or clumsy, but yes hard working girl. In conclusion, an older version of Chihiro. Again, that maybe what you're aiming for.
So to quickly explain the rates:
I put vision as 4.5 star because of the young/old Chihiro as stated above.
Originality at 4.5 because these were, in the end, ready made characters, but you have no idea how much I wanted to put a 5 on this.
Technique is at 4 because of my issue with the arm.
And impact is at 5 because no matter how many times I see this, it makes me speechless in awe.

I always find your work relaxing too look at.
The color combinations are beautiful as always,
background is very intriguing too, as in, i wish i could live in the landscapes you paint, so magical e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/hโฆ " width="15" height="13" alt="

As stated before, your technique fit's your style so well, that i can't think other than, that you have worked for years to achieve this.
But what bother's me a little is that little piece of jewelry on her chest, it kind of ruins the vision of the picture. Chihiro's design is simple, and should be drawn simple (just my opinion)
Also: In my head chihiro is as young as 12-13 years. she looks like she's 19 years in this picture, i don't know if you where going for this or not. still...
You have some kind of comfort zone where you tend to draw females with the same kind expression, and faces. It seems like you're having problems with drapery, and maybe should focus a little on that. (don't get me wrong you're not bad, and hell, i don't like drawing clothing much either XD )
In the end: i love the glow in this picture and her eyes are just
perfect, I can see that your'e putting a lot of love in your pictures, and you enjoy what you do. or else you wouldn't be as good as this. Can't wait to see more of your art in the future Sanguis e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sโฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="

This piece is stunning to say the least. It is a beautiful adaption of Spirited Away, your Chihiro is beautiful. She some how holds true to her character and is recognizable, but has your own flare, not to mention the amazing detail in her face, and on her clothes. Haku is wonderfully detailed and his very yellow-green eye stands out well.
In the way of criticism, which you might find nit-picky though with a piece this good it is hard to come up with much else, there are a few small details. The pin on Chihioro's top pops a lot, it is drawing attention away from her face, which is the main focus. Though the the blue of her eyes does help bring attention to her face, I find that it would help to either remove or change how bright the pin is. Also a minor detail the red lamp right under Haku's whisker on the far left, is very bright and draws the eye there, away from Haku, maybe you can lower the opacity of that one fire so that it still maintains the feel of the background without distracting the eye. These of course are really minor, the piece is beautiful and well composed.
PS I can't give a whole originality score, as much as I want to, since the characters aren't yours.

I can't make an official critique so I'll just comment on this one
I believe that Chihiro's eyes are brown, especially as asians don't have blue eyes. I can understand wanting to make some changes to make it your own, but I feel that something such as eye color should remain consistant with the original. You have made this your own already just in your style of drawing. Also, I would have tried to give Chihiro a more gentle, childish expression. She is quite young in the movie and [especially in the beginning] she is extremely needy and a big scaredy-cat [that being said I don't blame her, I'd be quite freaked out if my parents were turned into giant pigs and weird ghosts appeared and made me wash their hot baths for them ]. If you were trying to depict her as older, more grown up and sensible/courageous fair enough, but maybe then a little explanation behind the drawing would be appropriate in the artist comments. I'm sorry if this critique sounds harsh. I really do love your work and have been using some of your digital paintings as references along with some other artists to improve my own digital painting skill. The simple background of the moon and mountains give it a cold, but beautiful scenery, very much illustrating the whole mood of the story. Your shading is wonderful and your use of the blue and red-ish/orang-ish tones for highlighting Chihiro and Haku as well as a good balance of color.
I hope that this may help you and encourage you to keep on making these lovely paintings and to strive to keep on improving.
Best of luck!
