Description
Three mares traveled down the street, huddled together as they walked. Crescent, the unicorn stood in the middle, holding up a scrape of paper with her magic as the other two, Key Lime Pie and Pixel Blossom read from it. The Earth pony scowled."Wait, what?" Pixel frowned, trying to snatch the paper from her friend but failing. She gave Crescent a look but looked over at Key. "How much does your dad need again, Key?" She asked, walking around Crescent. Key drifted lazily beside Crescent, a easy smile gracing her lips.
"Five pounds." She answered. This earned a look from Crescent, who shoved the paper at Pixel.
"Who needs five pounds of butter?" Crescent asked, trying to think of what anypony, especially hippy ponies like Key's parents, would need with that much butter.
"Apparently her dad does." Pixel replied, looking over the list. "More importantly, why does he-" Her question was interupted by a male voice calling out to them. A familiar voice.
"My little butterfly!" Crescent jumped at the sound. No way...
"Huh?" They echoed as they turned to see a dark red Stallion trotting to catch up with them. It's him again. Crescent thought with a smile.
"Who's that?" Pixel demanded, scowling as he came into view. He was surprisingly slow for a stallion. Or was he just tired from running? Key snickered as he took a breather.
"Oh, another admirer, Moon?" She guessed, noting Crescent's interest in him. She shrugged.
"Yeah, he hit on me the other day." She explained watching his regain his energy after seeing her wait for him. "He struck out the first time but I have to admit, he is a bit more interesting than the usual bunch." Key nodded in agreement though Pixel just continued to scowl.
"I don't recognize him..." She stated. Crescent rolled her eyes. Of course, Pix had to be the one. Being the daughter of a city guard generally made her more paranoid than most.
"He said he's new to Canterlot, so relax, Pix." She assured, walking up to the stallion. She looked back to mouth the words, 'I've got this'. Standing in front of him again, she smiled coolly. "Well, if it isn't the cradle robber again. Here for round two of 'Imma try flirt witchu but fail at it'?" She challenged, hoping to get a rise out of him. She didn't get it.
Instead, he laughed.
"Nope, I'm here hoping for a second chance at a first impression?" He said, leaning down until they were eye to eye. "You game?" This wasn't what Crescent expecting. Usually stallion bristled at her jabs but didn't seem to mind... Time for plan B.
"And why should I?" She retorted, channeling her adoptive mothers sass as she swiped at her mane. "You aren't the first pent up stallion to try and earn my attentions." She added with a smirk. That aught to get the reaction she wanted. Again, she did not. He smiled instead. No, smirked, actually.
"Perhaps but let's be honest." He said, looking her straight in the eye. "I'm just a bit more interesting than the usual bunch, aren't I?" Crescent took a step back, frowning at his words. Had he heard her? No way, he was too far away. Probably just empty boasting.
...Don't know. How much are you willing to give in order to keep me entertained?" She asked, regaining her confidence as he seemed to flounder a bit at that. Was he expecting some other response?
"Oh!? Uh..." He stammered, looking around until his eyes fell on the ice cream cone he held up with his magic. "OH!" He holds up ice cream cone to her in offering. "I have ice cream." She could hold back a snicker he looked at her so hopefully. Really? An ice cream cone for a date?
"I prefer chocolate, actually." She replied, still trying to reign in her smile. He looked a bit put out by that but quickly recovered, seeming to enjoy her smile enough to continue.
"Fair enough." He relented, floating the cone back to his side. "At the very least, I've finally learned something about my little butterfly. She likes Chocolate." He said, his tone implying something she couldn't quite place. "Just something for me to keep in mind for our next meeting." Crescent scoffed at that.
"There might not be one if you don't keep me happy." She stated, doing her best to see as uptight and spoiled as she could. It wasn't hard since her mother showered her and Hon with stuff. It just felt like a coat that was too small and itchy to wear. Rose said nothing for a while before reaching out to brush a lock of hair from her face.
"Whether I can or not isn't up for debate." He said with such confidence that Crescent's mask faltered just a bit. "I will make you happy, because I know that's what you want most." His words echoed in her ears, touching something she hadn't known was there. She felt a bit naked then but he just kept going. "It's really just a matter of will you let me make you happy, my little butterfly?"
Crescent stood there for a moment, staring into his eyes. She had always been good at reading other ponies. Growing up as she did, she needed such a skill. Even after being raised out of that hell, her skill was still needed for the two-faced lying ponies in 'polite' society. Such words should have sounded fake, like all the other times colts and stallions promised her happiness. They all swore they could make her happy in ways that she had dreamed of. All of them were liars, just trying to get their chance at her. They all wanted to be the first to break her ice cold wall and claim the prize of her sex. She was the flower blooming on a hill surrounded by blistering winds and harsh slopes. She expected this stallion to be like the rest, just another stallion working at using her as another notch on his headboard. But he was different.
He wasn't lying.
She couldn't be sure if he really was different from the rest yet but at the very least, he wasn't lying to her. If nothing else, that earned him a chance.
"...Alright, I'll bite." She finally said, choosing to ignore the joy burst from him as she turned to her friends. "I'll catch up with you girls later, kay?" She called out, cocking her head at Rose, who looked like his face would split from smiling so much. The two mares frowned, apparently not expecting their friend to go off with the guy.
"Oh?" Key muttered, frowning for a second. Her eyes drifted over to Rose, who continued to stare at Crescent like he was mesmerized. "OH?! Okay, see ya, mate!" She cried, pulling Pixel close. Pixel was still frowning.
"If you say so."
*****
"Ah! Look at that, Pixy!!" Key squealed, her voice being muted by a hoof covering it. She continued talking anyway, her words muffled. Pixel rolled her eyes.
"Key, shut it!" She whispered fiercely from behind a tree. "She'll hear us if you shout like that!." Pixel waited for her friend to calm down before removing her hoof. She was still beaming.
"Sorry, pixy! i'm just super excited for our cobber." She said, looking ready to shoot off into the air. "I mean, when was the last time you saw her hanging out with a guy?" Pixel couldn't deny this. Crescent, despite being very popular with stallions, rarely dated. The few she did were always following after her like puppies. This guy... he was leading her and she didn't seem to mind...which was weird for her. She couldn't be-
"I can't believe this!" Pixel turned to see a pair of mares hiding in the bushes beside them. Both were pretty, but in a weird way. The pink one held a kind of beauty that captivated the eyes but her own was dark and listless. The blue mare was cute but her near permanent scowl made it hard to notice. The blue one sucked her teeth. "Look at him, wasting time with that nobody."
"Nobody?! Crescent is one of the most sought after mares in Canterlot." Key defended, frowning at the blue mare. Key didn't get mad at anyone but even she looked a bit miffed. "What do you know about her?"
"I know she's the reason we aren't working right now. He's just wasting time." She shot back, glaring up at Key. Her face twisted in disgust. "Ugh, look at him, Mel! Drooling over her like a dog in heat or something. It's weird, ain't it?" She turned to her companion, who just stared ahead stoically. "Mel?"
"...You're right but wrong, Note." She replied, her eyes stuck on the pair. "It's strange but I don't think its a waste of time."
Meanwhile
Crescent pulled out her compact, watching their companions attempt to follow them covertly.
"Wow, they sure are noisy." She muttered, smirking up at Rose. "I would have thought your sisters would be better at sneaking considering how nosy they are."
"You would think but they are also idiots." He retorted, smiling despite his annoyance at their antics. He could handle himself. "I'm more shocked about your friends. They are acting like a bunch of mother hens." Crescent giggled.
"Yeah but they aren't so bad. They only want the best for me." She explained, a soft smile gracing her lips. Rose was mystified for a moment before she continued. "I'm sure your sisters feel the same about you." She assured, looking up with a smile only to frown as his expression darkened. "What's wrong?"
"Huh?" He looked up from the ground, not realizing he'd been stopped. "O-oh, I'm sorry. I was just thinking that... you might be right about that." He said, as if discovering a sad truth. Crescent opened her mouth to ask why he looked so sad at the notion before thinking better of it. It was none of her business. She barely knew this pony. So she decided to change the subject.
"So," she started, looking away for a second. "whats up with your tail? It's different from before, I noticed." Rose smirked as he turned to her.
"A bit straight forward, don't you think?" He teased, earning a look of confusion from the mare. "I mean, It's rude to stare a mans ass, honey. Though I can't say I mind too much." Crescent cocked a brow. Man?
"I wasn't." She replied, pointing to his tail. "I just noticed that your tail isn't like that of a pony so-" She was interrupted by Rose sudden about face.
"Wait, what?!" He cried, panic darting in his eyes. He looked at his tail like he'd never seen it before, which was strange. "Shit!! Uh..." Rose's mind raced. Shit, he'd forgotten to redo his disguising spell. Seeing his little butterfly must that distracted him enough to undo the spell he'd cast on himself. Now he had a freaking fin for a tail! No wonder she'd been staring...
"...Are you a hybrid?" She asked casually, cocking her head to the side.
"Eh?" Rose looked up. "Is... is that a normal thing here?" Were hybrids a regular thing in this land? If so, maybe he could save his magic rather than using it up every morning to make him and his sisters look more pony-like.
"In canterlot? No." She answered, walking once more. Rose followed as she explained. "The ponies here are as stuck up as peacocks but in general... Kinda." She grimaced, as if unsure. "Since we've made trade deals with other nations, the influx of non-ponies has made hybrids a bit more mainstream. It used to be that finding a nonpony in Equestria was a big deal but now we have towns that have various nonponies. Griffins, Zebras, Yaks and even the odd changeling, though I have yet to meet one willing to stay in their natural form." She smiled to herself, losing herself in her own words. "Honestly, the most interesting part is how much they bring to Equestria. The unique architecture of the Changelings and the various new spells brought forth by Zebra's potions and their particular way of viewing magic has made class so much more interesting as of late. Like, just the other day, we were learning about this plant that grows in the Everfree, which no pony goes into since it's super dangerous and stuff and-" She stopped when she recalled who she was talking to. Her face turned red as she noticed how intently Rose was looking back at her. "W-what are you looking at? Why are you not saying anything?!" He cocked a brow.
"Hm? Did you want me to say anything?"
"N-no! I mean, ye- no, but...why didn't you?" She demanded, her face still red.
"Why would I?" He countered. Crescent's pout deepened
"Cause I was ranting..." She grumbled, her pout deepening as her ears unconsciously folded down. "again..." She hadn't gone on one of her rants in months and the last time was with Hon. So why him?
"Yeah, a bit." He chuckled, holding his ice cream as a shield as Crescent glowered at him. "You got way off subject but I don't mind. You looked like you were having fun talking about that stuff." Crescent blew up her cheeks, trying to keep herself from revealing too much.
"Yeah, it's one of my hobbies."
"To learn about other cultures?" He asked, watching the mare think to herself. Crescent said nothing for a minute as she stared at the ground.
"I don't know. I just... like learning about stuff." She replied, looking up at the sky. "My family travels a lot so I get to see a lot without having the time to learn about stuff there. So I end up binge reading on the subjects later. I have, like, millions of little facts I have to look up later while I'm here." Rose turned to her, his face falling.
"You're leaving Canterlot?" He asked. Crescent briefly thought about lying to him. It's what she always did when strange stallions asked her stuff about her personal life. Yet with him, she kind of didn't want to lie. He hadn't.
"Not for a while but I can't waste time." She said, ignoring the joy returning to his face. "Canterlot has one of the best libraries aside from the Crystal empire. Things that most ponies only dream of knowing." At this, Rose's eyes took on a different light. They were just as intent but seemed to be focused on something else.
"Really?" He muttered, eating his ice cream. His tone was weird, as if such a thing was important but he wasn't sure what to do with the information. "I did not know that." Crescent cocked a brow.
"You really aren't from here, are you?" Rose gave her a smile.
"Nope. Me and my sisters kind of ran away and ended up here, for some reason." He answered, though Crescent's gut burned with questions. Questions she couldn't ask cause it was none of her business. Darn... Time to move on.
"Do you like it?" She asked, strangely curious. Despite how hard life was before her mother had adopted her, Crescent loved Canterlot. No matter what, it was her home and she could never feel quite as comfortable anyplace but here.
"Hm... I think so. It's not like home but it also kind of is." He tried to explain. "The streets are crowded and the peop- ponies here are assholes but the air is so much more quiet. It's... relaxing." Crescent frowned at this. She had, as far as she could tell, been born in Canterlot. She'd grown up on the less nice parts of town and had seen things that would haunt weaker mare's to the bone. She knew this city and its streets just as well as her mother knew every stitch on her dresses. She knew the name of ponies that had been wanted for decades that roam canterlot like it was a resort and he called the city relaxing?
"Really?!" She gave him a look of pure disbelief. He really was a tourist. "You're right about the ponies being assholes but relaxing? What was your home like?"
"...Not."
"I see." She sighed, understanding the wealth of meaning in one word. Before the mood could spoil, Rose took her foreleg and pulled her back to reality.
"Moving on from that, how about you and I go check out that library?" He suggested, gesturing back to the city square. "I wanted us to have a quiet date anyway and where better than a library, eh?"
"This ain't a date." She stated, though it felt less like 'just a walk' now.
"You're right, it's not a date." He stated, pointing at her with his ice cream that dripped onto the ground. "It's our first! Gotta make it memorable, don't we, my little Butterfly?"
"Tch, you are such a loser." She muttered, though she couldn't help but smile.
*****
I really wanted to draw Crescent and Rose's first date, though only he calls it such. Crescent calls it a 'walk through the park'. Still she is enjoying herself for once. Meanwhile, her besties, Key Lime Pie and Pixel Blossom 'sneakily' follow them. Key is ecstatic that her best friends is finally finding a stallion who likes her and actually tries to get to know her rather than just trying to bone her. Pixel is suspicious of him, noting how different he is from other ponies, as well as being an entirely new pony to Canterlot. Who was he?
To add to this, Rose's sisters are watching him as well. Sour is angry that he is abandoning his mission to hang out with some dumb pony girl. They had more important things to do than just wait around for him as he made googoo eyes at some mare. Ardent is just curious as to how things will turn out. Perhaps his actions will bear fruit after all?
Crescent and Rose hang out a few more times after this. She isn't 'dating' him but he is one of the few stallions who amuse her enough to not be bothersome. He even thinks her accent is cute...
