It comes from a belief that the number of God is 3(as in: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost), and that the devil made his number 666 in an attempt to outdo God by multiplying it by two three times in a row. Or so my 12th grade English teacher explained it while talking about the importance of numbers in certain works of literature. (just don't quote me on it)
