And let's not forget the fan prequel, "Portal: Prelude"
And of course the 3D remake of the flash version, "Portal TFV Mappack"
I'm sure there are others but these are the ones I've played. Portal Prelude in particular is much more challenging than the original, and throws a lot of new mechanics at you with little or no warning. It's also got easter eggs, red herrings, and some really devious turret placements.
Portal TFV Mappack is similar to portal the flash version, as the name implies, but it's also got a companion cube loveboat ride and an original end boss.

the entire aspect of portal is physics.
many of valve's games have very advanced physic engines. Portal's one of them.

I saw in a commentary (which is included in the game i believe) they said that they didn't originally have anything on the legs. But people were questioning why falling so far...er, fast, didn't kill you, seeing as the falling had to stay for reason of making the game impossibly hard otherwise, they just randomly stuck something on the feet so people wouldn't ask questions.

They work the same way as the portal gun does, Aperture Science magic.

My guess is that they work on a two part system, with the bottom black hook (which looks surprisingly similar to a real sports prosthetic foot.)taking out the initial shock of the landing impact. And the second part is some kind of inertial dampener that reverberates through her whole body, and also play's a role in how the main impact of fall would NOT be transferred right into the soft tissue of the calf muscles. Seeing as how the leg devices don't actually strap on to her at all, but rather "stick" to the back of the legs, I've come to the theory that she is in fact being held by them in some kind of tracterbeam.
Now, if that wasn't nerdy enough for you, feel free to add your own input. With help I'm sure everyone can be slightly disillusioned about the superiority of our cake toting overlord.

lol, i have actually seen extreme nerdiness before, and i mean EXTREME. i found a group of SUPER POKEMON FANS. and we were gonna be watching the first three pokemon movies, and half the group were singing the pokemon theme song! it scared the shit outtaa me and redefined "biggest fan" for me! srsly, college ppls still being that fanatic, and this guy brought ALL his games too!
*ahem* getting back to portal, i think they wanted to not make her die at such heights because there were some parts that required flying thru the air and going to great heights to test these portal stuff... and plus if you were to infinitely fall thru the portals and then move a portal, you should die in real life, cuz you did just fall thru like 100 feet or more, plus that ur getting faster as you fall.

I think those leg things are braces to keep your shins from snapping after a high fall. Not really sure though, just a guess. I just got the game yesterday after buying the orange box... I'm on level 18 and so far it's pretty good. It's hard to play a platformer when you can't see your own damn feet, though.

eh..this game was okay, I played it when it was able to be downloaded for free, but Steam slows the heck out of my computer so I eventually uninstalled it.
It's always fun screwing around with the portals ^^
