Glados let Chell live because she's going to die soon anyway. She was running around the old test chambers interacting with conversion gel and got poisoned from the moon dust thy used to make it. Which explains why all the old test chambers were sealed off. Then Glados used what little compassion she had to let Chell die in piece.

I'm not gonna lie, I cried a little when the game ended.... then I saw Wheatly and the Space core floating around. It brought my spirits up a little.
Now, what I'm hoping is that in the next Half-Life game VALVe puts Chell into the action. She and Gordon would have a great time not talking.
