I've dubbed Raglan Castle as "The Accidental Castle", as I stumbed upon it by pure chance. I was actually trying to get to Monmouth Castle, which is about 6 miles to the East. That Monmouth is a total maelstrom of roads from which unwary travellers seem to get spat out in random directions, and that pretty much every road sign in Wales is half covered by vegetation, are the only reason I found it. And thank god I did! It's a mighty impressive place.It was used as a fortress right up until the end of the English Civil War, during which it was a Royalist headquarters. When Parlementarian forces finally captured it, they razed it so it could never be used again.

Wow... This is a pretty interesting-looking place!
I'm sure you know me by now as that guy who asked you for comic tips, and here's a little bit of info about it: the areas I'm making for it are all heavily influenced on real locations.
In the case of the first chapter I'm working on, the town setting is based on Tintagel Castle; King Arthur's birthplace.
And this proves to be very influential as well. Maybe I can save it as visual reference for the last chapter which is set in a fortress / prison.

So there are castles and fortresses just sitting there with no one but hardy explorers finding them?

No, all the old ruin's like these are tourist attractions.Β They fix up walkways, hand rails and the like to make it safe and partition off any areas where it is not.Β Usually that spoils the look and feel of the place, but it looks pretty good here.
