Fun fact: the Companion Cube is AN EVEN BIGGER LIE!!!
No, seriously, it's just a psychological trick the developers had to put in. In the first beta, there was just an ordinary Storage Cube in that chamber, and early playtesters ignored it most of the time. By adding in the Companion Cube, playtesters realized said cube was mandatory in that chamber
