The most laughably depressing thing about this whole affair is that the supposedly offensive and extremely blasphemous being "protested" about wasn't even that fucking offensive! No insinuations that Islam is dangerous or that the Prophet was a murderer or what have you, just a cartoon cover of Mohammed facepalming and complaining that it was hard to be worshipped by extremist morons.

I'm sure there was more "reason" to the attack then just some disagreeable artwork (as the magazine's offices have been firebombed in the past by other extremist tossers) - frustration with what they perceived to be the West's anti-Islam bent springs to mind - , just twisted and unpalatable to any sane and civil member of society.

BJockes In reply to Corporal-Yakob [2015-01-14 23:48:40 +0000 UTC]

The true reason? Here you have: they draw the prophet with a face. That's the big and infamous blasphemy who motivated the attackers. Yes, twisted and unpalatable to any sane and civil member of society.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Corporal-Yakob In reply to BJockes [2015-01-17 14:42:18 +0000 UTC]

While the world would certainly be much easier to deal with in such a case, I extremely doubt the reasoning was as simple as "GRARGH This magazine I have gone out of my way to view fills me with overzealous rage!"

More likely this was just the cherry on the top of a long list of perceived injustices, like:

- Not being able to integrate into the host country properly
- Being isolated culturally and politically
- Poor socioeconomic situations
- Anger at misrepresentations of the War on Terror as a war on Islam
- All these incoherent furies being exploited and radicalized by self-serving scum who send others to die for their own twisted causes

I certainly don't condone what happened or assign blame to the victims, I just think its counter-productive to reduce what happened to simplistic tones of "They hate our freedom!". We're never going to stamp extremist bastards out if we don't understand how they come into being.

Note: I am being general because I have no expertise on what its like for the Islamic community in France, these are just my observations on what usually causes cowardly acts like these.

Oh sorry, I though you asked what was the principal reproach those attackers had against the journal, which was the face of the prophet.
About the rest, no need to go in a frenzy and write a whole paragraph. For what I read we have the same opinion.

The most disgusting thing to see is that the American press, the supposed defenders of Free Speech, are falling all over themselves to NOT mention the killers as Muslims, not mention WHY Charlie Hebdo was targeted, not call them terrorists, and then censor themselves (pixellating the cover of an issue held up by the editor in one photograph so as not to show a potentially offensive image of Mohammed..)

The American left bashes Christianity with gleeful abandon, but walks on eggshells and kowtows whenever Islam is mentioned.

RKBKirin In reply to Mauser712 [2015-01-09 03:33:41 +0000 UTC]

You don't seem to be looking at very good American press coverage.   Try NPR.  They've been very clear why this place was targeted and going into the details.

Or watch Fox.  They've certainly not been shy about saying this was an Islamist attack.

There's a whole range of news agencies in US.   If you're seeing poor coverage by one, find a better choice.

Well said. Any coward can make fun of a person who died for others and said "love your enemies"... but be warned if you wish to speak against a self proclaimed prophet that had multiple child wives.

Moss-Works In reply to Mauser712 [2015-01-08 12:10:24 +0000 UTC]

The censoring is to not offend muslims. These weren't muslims that did this. They were terrorists and nothing more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mauser712 In reply to Moss-Works [2015-01-08 21:36:49 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the "No true Scotsman" defense.  If they're terrorists, they're not Muslims, even if they shouted Allahu Akbar" and proclaimed "The Prophet has been avenged!"

Nobody censors to not offend members of any other religion, so why to not offend Muslims?  Oh, right, because they tend to kill people over cartoons.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moss-Works In reply to Mauser712 [2015-01-08 22:08:50 +0000 UTC]

Nobody censors not to offend members of another religion?

I guess you haven't read anything on the rash of Satanist things lately, as happen every christmastime. Or maybe all the times people neglect to mention the fact that a murderer is Christian, even if he said he was killing others in the name of the Christian God?

Whether you're Christian, Muslim, Scientologist, or Satanist, would you not denounce a criminal for saying they are not acting within the 'truth' of your religion?

Terrorists are terrorists. I know it's only natural to try and lump them with whatever they say they're doing, but in all reality they are following their own agenda and not the agenda of their religion in most cases. I can definitively say that this is one of those cases.

again more proof for me personally that these people who did this
too often still live with a mentality people had over a 1000 years back.

If all you can do is kill someone who is questioning your faith/reasoning/guidelines,
I am of a mind you are the one that's in the wrong.

And I don't care if you're christian, muslim or whatever faith there is out there,
we live in an age where these actions are simply a sign of weakness, of people throwing a tantrem like a child,
because they didn't get what they wanted.

Absolutely despicable.

What I would like to see happen from this tragedy is cartoonists worldwide picking up pens and mocking the f*ck out of islamic extremists, and terrorists in general.

Maybe it would persuade a few of the younger ones that they WON'T be heroes if they blow themselves up in a shopping mall, just violent and stupid.

I'm Sorry, I respect your views but do you really think "mocking" them will get people to stop? I think that would cause more anger and more hot blooded and uneducated people to act impulsively. What i believe should be done, is people around the world, pick up their pens, and Educate what is right and whats wrong. Mocking people will only cause more anger. Educating them will either show that their ignorant to the truth, or just that they need more guidance.

Peace be With You.

Oh. Thank you.

Now I know where George Lucas lifted it from. I know he also pilfered stuff from the Christian bible (Endor is from 1 Samuel 28:7) as well as several other sources.

Religious texts are brilliant sources for story ideas, especially fantasy. Some of the best authors get their ideas from really old books, and just change them around.

dinshino In reply to Para-celsus [2015-01-26 23:21:25 +0000 UTC]

And then there's some of the really weird old historical accounts. Like the travels of Marco Polo (dragons come up a lot, including one that sounds like some sort of Dromaeosaurid) and the tales history of the Greek historian Herodotus (one entry describes Ramphorhyncus eating figs in the ancient city of Buto).

At least you're putting an educated thought out there that says something, rather than spitting out the already generic phrase every other hack is.
It's about more than free speech sadly.
