Time Spent: about a week on and off.
Well what to say...Firebending is the bending for me so an ep about the origins of firebending, was just begging me to do something about it.
I tried not to rush this spreading it out as much as I could so I would give every aspect the same time and attention. It took me about 6 layers just for the flames lol. I pulled out all the stops for this one and tried to keep it faithful to the episode...so hope you enjoy!

You did remarkably well keeping true to the series. I had to stop and take a good look to see that you haven't just cut and paste the artwork here yourself. lol My husband was doing that to me this morning with the Avatar piece I'm working on. "You did that?"

Normally, i'm not too impresed by drawings that closely refrence screenshots from the show, but this is absolutely STUNNING. The composition alone is spectacular, but you also did an amazing job of adding fresh life to the stills you based this off of.

Thanks, yup I spent a while on this because I couldnt resist doing a something based on that episode. Though after firebending waterbending would be my next choice.

You did this entirely for Zuko, right? Well, Zuko's dragon was the blue one, not the red one.

Are you sure? When they were shown copying the dragon's moves Zuko was doing his one alongside the red dragon.
I think they were interchanging with the dragons so if they didnt have a specific dragon, its makes more sense to have chosen the red dragon for Zuko.

I watched the episode right now, and yes, Zuko danced with the red dragon, but when Judgement Time came, he was facing the blue one; the blue one is the most symbolic for Zuko.

Well I do have Zuko doing firebending alongside the Dragon, and he was doing "dancing" with the red one.
It only really matters which one is more symbolically tied to Zuko IF I was planing to do an Aang one - which Im not. So I dont think it matters much. Also from a design perspective its more justified for me to have chosen the red one as to match with the warm, earthly colours of the pieces overall compostiton.
I think more people would have questioned me to why I had a BLUE dragon right in the middle of all warm colours if I had chosen the other one...

Personally, i agree with your artistic decision to use the red dragon in this piece. The blue just would not have worked as well with your color pallet and composition.

Yea, I based it on some screenshots because there are just some iconic scenes in the ep that you just cant improve on. I also wanted accuracy for the dragon you just cant get from memory.
But I did the lineart, inks, colouring and composition in photoshop which did require alot of time. Thanks again for the comment.

Well, I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said my jaw dropped when I saw this. It's incredible. The only thing that threw me off was when I saw the Zuko in the top left corner didn't have a right eyebrow. Other than that- I'm awestruck.
