Description
Experimenting around in Bryce, trying to recreate the look of the Stargate's event horizon, as it looks in the series. Stargate model is by Osiris9 at sharecg.com ([link] ) and is free to use. The rest (what little there is) is set up by me, including the event horizon. I'll experiment some more, and try different configurations.EDIT 4:
All the experiments with the event horizon, numbered from the first one to the latest one. Also added some more glow to the last one.

Well, that´s working self employed... For you as a linguistic freak: "working self employed" in german is "selbstständig arbeiten". But if you write it a bit different - "selbst ständig arbeiten" - it means "yourself permanently working". Which is perhaps much closer to reality...
Yeah, I just started on the Atlantis series, too. The last episode of SG1... it´s sad in more than one way... It´s warmed up stuff from previous episodes, or even from Star Trek. It seems like the writers didn´t know what to do, knowing there is no "future" for the story line.

Yeah, it's crazy. Slept two hours on Monday night, two hours Tuesday night, then went to bed before ten! last night, and slept until six. Crazy! And still they demand more!
Ah, funny little linguistic quirk there, yeah. And indeed, the second version is closer to reality.
Still got the SG-1 movies, then I'm gonna take a little Stargate break before I start on Atlantis. Got the entire Alias to watch, which is an excellent show, and has some science fiction elements.
It was weird last episode. I honestly expected something more. An episode like that belongs in the middle of a season. But well, it was a really good run they had, I was starting to like it more, getting used to Mitchell and Vala. Hopefully they get to do one more movie, and get a better closure to the whole thing.
By the way, did you see my new Stargate? I've found a really good looking gate now.

Oh well, may be they still make SG movies when they are pensioners, like the Star Trek folks did. But then - they have been old in the series already several times.
Yes, the gate is quiet nice. But I had to smile about the MALP... By showing it stranded on the side of the ramp, you summed up something I always wondered about: why would they use a wheeled vehicle if there is almost everywhere some kind of ramp or stairs in front of the gate? And ever so often it ends up as you have shown in the picture - one would expect they learn and build something that can handle stairs better.

Saw The Ark of Truth last night. It was OK. Not a totally satisfactory way to end the Ori threat, but it worked, I guess. It was pretty much like a double (or triple) episode of the show, I was expecting a little more. But it was OK. Hoping to watch Continuum sometime during the weekend. I do hope they'll make more movies. I know there's talk of an Atlantis movie. It would be nice if they did a crossover movie, like the episode where they visited Atlantis, I would like to see that. And that they bring back O'Neill!
Originally I placed the MALP standing just to the side of the gate, but I remembered all the times they show if laying at the side of the stairs, or something. Thought you'd like that little detail. Yeah, I've often wondered that my self, I guess those flying drones are the best they could come up with. I mean, if they gave the MALP belts instead of wheels, it would have worked better. Oh well...

As long as they find enough viewers, they´ll find financiers for more movies or series, that´s how it always goes. There is enough potential for more in the Stargate universe to fill a lot of seasons - all it needs is good writers.
Yes, the fact that it´s stranded adds a lot to the picture, rather than if it would just stand there.
Well, one would assume that with the SGC´s rescources they could come up with something better. Generally - such a probe doesn´t need to be so big. Would look less scary when it´s smaller, too...
But in the show they use a lot of stuff that actually exists - some of it quiet modern. They must have some good connection to the military.

True, true... And actually, I read yesterday that there is a go for a third SG-1 movie, which is planned to start filming soon, and will be released sometime next year. And I just saw the new trailer for Stargate Universe, I must say I'm excited too see if it's as good as it looks.
They probably had an advisor from the military or airforce, much like O'Neill played on Wormhole X-treme. But with all the technology they've had access to over the seasons, you would think they could have built something better.

You see, there is hope...
I think they get much more than just advice from the military. They have a lot of stuff (weapons in particular) which normal mortals never get hold of - unless you are a soldier. Like the flying drone they send through the gate - that´s a real one, as used in the 2nd Iraq war and in Afghanistan. Meaning they lend this to the film people while it was still latest technology in the real military.
And of course they repay them - the show is one big advert for the US air force. Apparently the intelligence services (like CIA, NSA ect) refused to cooperate - they are always shown ranging between incompetent and treasonous. I wonder what they did to annoy the SG makers so much...

Well, yes, there is always hope.
You make some good points, that are really obvious when I think about it. Yeah, it's pretty clear the Air Force is great, while operatives of the CIA and NSA or whatever are either stupid, corrupt, evil, or all three.
It feels strange now, to be done with it. I liked the last movie, Continuum, and how they finally got rid of Baal. Though some of the stuff felt like repetitions of things done in the show (the time travel thing, alternate time lines, all of that). And you knew from the moment when Jackson lost his leg that they would make it back to their time. I would have liked it better, I think, if he still missed his leg when they got back.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-09-01 16:42:17 +0000 UTC]
I wonder if a single leg can ascend as well...
Yeah, I liked Continuum too - it feels like a double episode that was made to Peter DeLouise´s likes: everything much biiiggerr! Did you watch the "making of" as well? They spend some serious money on this one, and the military is in it again, too. That´s a real nuclear submarine - no CGI. And the arctic scenery is real too, also courtesy of the military who flew the film team to some arctic outpost.

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-09-03 22:02:56 +0000 UTC]
I think it's established in the show that for something to ascend, it needs to be intelligent, so no, I don't think his leg would ascend.
That's the downside of downloading: No extra stuff! I got only the movie, so no, I haven't seen the "making of". I'll see if I can find it, though, I love that kind of stuff.
The arctic scenes outside I can believe where done on location, but not the ones inside the boat where they came out of the stargate. No fog on their breaths!

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-09-04 09:46:28 +0000 UTC]
Well, I´m not so sure in Jackson´s case - ascending has become such a habit for him...
Yes, I has some advantages to buy the proper DVD. There was quiet a bit of extras with the movies, and some interesting stuff too. Beyond "it was so much fun to work with everybody on the set, and I think it´s our best movie so far", if you know what I mean...

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-09-04 10:20:02 +0000 UTC]
If you wanna get into the details, he actually only ascended the one time. But of course, he's had a lot to do with the ascended, they'd probably ascend his leg as a courtesy. On the other hand, does a being of energy really need a leg?
Well, I will buy the DVDs if I come across them at a reasonable price. I do love bonus material!

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-09-04 14:04:23 +0000 UTC]
Right, the 2nd time he changed his mind half way... Well, as ONeill said: this whole ascending thing is overrated. Actually it´s all very vague - they float around as energy, doing what?
Well, there are the few who want to do something, but they are not really allowed to. Sounds like it´s pretty boring up there...

From the one glimpse we've gotten of the Ascended on their own plane, they apparently sit around a diner, reading the paper etc. Seems pretty boring to me as well. Guess O'Neill got it right.
Have you heard that two new Stargate movies are in the works now, scheduled to start shooting as soon as season 1 of Stargate Universe wraps? One SG-1 movie, and one Atlantis movie.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-09-16 17:10:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, sitting in this diner forever doesn´t sound so tempting.
Well, so we can have hope... However, I still have not seen all SG Atlantis and Universe yet. I´ll get them in time...

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-09-18 10:23:46 +0000 UTC]
Heh, no, it does seem a bit tedious. I'm guessing they do other stuff too, though. Ascended Golf, Ascended Tennis, etc.
It would have been a neat trick if you had seen any of Universe at all, seeing as it hasn't been released yet, but yeah, I guess I know what you mean.
By the way: I ran across this little thing today: [link]
Makes me realize I have really boring PC case.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-09-22 18:07:06 +0000 UTC]
Yes, especially the design of the diner... For higher life forms I would have expected something more stylish...
Well, there is a problem with sports: because of their total understanding of the universe they know in advance where a ball will go, or who will win a game. No need to actually hit a ball, if you know already what will happen. Yeah, it really must be boring...

Hehe... So, what do they call Stargate SG-1 fans? Star Trek fans are Trekkies, does that make us Gaties?
Actually, I beg to differ on Enterprise. True, it wasn't very good at first, but the last few episodes were actually very good. It deserved one more season to see if it could get better, to my mind. The other shows, yes, got to agree there. (Though I always liked Voyager more than DS-9, a Star Trek show that actually didn't do any star trekking...)
Not quite sure what the job is yet, it's for a huge client in the electric power market, and concerns energy, that's all I know (well, I do know who the client is, but I'm not at liberty to discuss it.)

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-08-12 11:16:57 +0000 UTC]
...or "Gators" perhaps?
Well, I can´t judge Enterprise really; I only caught a few glimpses of it when switching channels. But every time it looked poor. Nothing matches the Star Trek feel - the art design, the actors, the music, everything is different. In the older series they had Jean Roddenberry telling them how it´s supposed to look, but since he died... It seems a lot of old Star Trek viewers think that way - or they wouldn´t have canceled the show.
So it´s the manual book for a nuclear power plant then... Oh well, better than nothing, as I said.
Just make sure the translation is correct, when you come to chapters like "emergency shutdown" or "core cooling regulation" and such...

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-08-12 12:19:33 +0000 UTC]
"Gators" sounds like a Florida sports team.
The story line in the last few episodes of Enterprise were among the best episodes of any Scifi show, they were that good. I feel that the ratings would have improved it they had been allowed to continue for a while longer. But that's over and done anyway. And good old GENE Roddenberry would probably roll in his grave if he saw how you spelled his name.
Hehe... Well, got confirmation that the job is on today, but there will be fewer translators than anticipated, so now the word count is 4000 words per day! Which is gonna be hell, but will be worth it on pay day.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-08-13 15:14:11 +0000 UTC]
You got a point there... And even spelling it "Gaters", it would sound the same...
That´s also how I came to Jean Roddenberry - I only remembered it phonetically. The "Jean" seemed odd to me too, but I just didn´t click on, and I was to lazy to look it up somewhere.
And he will be spinning in his grave anyway - seeing what they have done to his Star Trek universe. Baseball caps? Hippie songs from the 70s? Don´t know about the quality of the stories - I can never stand it long enough to understand the story. Either that or the next block of commercials kicks in, and I switch channels...
Wow - 4000 words a day! How many pages is that? I´m really starting to hope it´s nothing critical... If there is a big, smoking hole in the norwegian landscape soon, because someone pressed the wrong button, we know who to blame...

Commercials? Not a problem when you download. Not that I've downloaded any Star Trek yet, but I probably will. Bought me some DVD covers now, so I can make my own collection of TV series. They take up too much harddrive space otherwise.
Yeah, it's a huge job, so huge that our agency couldn't take it all on, it has been split between several agencies. We've got from 1,000,000 til 1,500,000 words in total, and we've only started on the first batch, which is around 150,000 words. And not to worry, it's nothing critical, at least not the files I'm working on. And seeing as we're talking about American user manuals, there is no hope of anyone with half a brain doing anything wrong. Everything is explained to the smallest detail, often more than once or twice. Yes, it's mind boggingly boring stuff.

Downloading... well, let´s see. The Star Trek stuff is a lot - STNG, DS9 and Voyager each have 7 seasons. That´s nearly 150 DVDs, well perhaps 100 if you get rid of some crap and pack them a bit. With the low prices for HDDs it´s perhaps cheaper to store it on harddrive.
Gee, what on earth can be so complex? And who is supposed to read and memorize it all? Must be a couple of thousand pages...
Yea, that´s the downside when translating everything - often it´s not very entertaining. Would be cool if you could pick the jobs, like translating novels or movies or so. But well, it`s called work...

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-08-15 18:04:36 +0000 UTC]
Only if you download direct DVD copies. Usually it's ripped and saved in .avi or .mpg, so it takes much less space. The entire 10 seasons of SG-1, for instance, takes around 70 GB on my harddrive, and will take about 18-20 DVDs. No bonus stuff, of course. You might be right even so, I recently saw a 1TB external harddrive for around 90 Euros.
The job, as far as I can tell from what I've read so far, concerns a company that's moving into the Norwegian market, and needs a lot of its documentation translated to Norwegian. We're 6 translators working on it right now. I only have one file, but that is 265 pages long, over 30,000 words to finish by Friday. And then we move on to the next batch...

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-08-16 08:26:03 +0000 UTC]
Yes, HDD are incredibly cheap now. 1TB equals 250 DVDs - there is the matter of reliability though, as we discussed before.
My god, 265 pages in one week - that´s got to be payed well!

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-08-16 11:39:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, one should have at least two backups, perhaps both HD and DVD. I think I'm gonna buy a new external HD when the pay for the job comes in, I can afford it then. Because, yes, it will pay well. At the very least we get 0.03 euros per word, but this job will probably pay more. So I can expect at the very least 900 Euros for my part in this first batch. And my fiancee is doing an equally big part of the job.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-08-16 16:24:05 +0000 UTC]
Well, rather get 2 identical HDDs - chances that both die at the same time are minimal, and if one does you may get a free replacement.
3 cent a word... I guess you´re hoping for lots of "a" and "the", and not stuff like "impudence" or "ostentatiousness"...

Jonas72 In reply to Beatminister [2009-08-16 22:28:45 +0000 UTC]
I like living dangerously, so I guess I'll make do with the one HD.
3 cents a word is just the normal rate, this is a special "paid-per-job" job, which is normally more. So yes, money in the bank for us.

Beatminister In reply to Jonas72 [2009-08-17 20:52:42 +0000 UTC]
I hope you don´t risk so much regarding your translation. You can find smaller external drives for €50 - a good investment, instead of risking loosing a lot of worked hours.
