Never played Metal Gear Solid. I hear it's a great series, though, so i'll take it as a compliment!

Yup, it is a compliment, Metal Gear Solid has a solid ( ) storytelling.

Have you heard of Sean Gordon Murphy? Cause the tonal effects and chisel brushwork reminds me a lot of his...

JonasScharf In reply to AJthe90skid [2014-07-09 17:43:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he's awesome! I've been reading a lot of his comics lately.
I hope it doesn't come off like a cheap rip off or anything though...

It also looks a bit like Spacefriend-KRUNK 's work--whose work looks a bit like urban-barbarian 's stuff... Point being, that is a "style" a few guys are bringing to the forefront these days. I say emulation is great as long as you can make it your own instead of just trying to be a carbon copy.

These pages are possibly your best interiors yet--unless you're holding out on us!

JonasScharf In reply to Atlas0 [2014-07-10 06:57:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Well, I have a lot more recent stuff that I'm still holding back.

Interesting, I don't think that Zach Howard and Dan Panosian have a similar style. I do like all of the 3 though.
And while it may be inspired by Sean Murphy and those other guys, it just developed as I discovered brushes and brush pens and that I feel a lot more comfortable
with looser lines and more brushwork. It's nice to let the tools do part of the job for you thanks to happy accidents and all instead of struggling to get "clean" lines.
As these pages go on you'll see that I'm developing more of my own thing (i hope?).

Oh, James Harren is also a pretty big inspiration for me!

Atlas0 In reply to JonasScharf [2014-07-10 07:39:52 +0000 UTC]

You're probably right; I may just be generalizing because of their similar techniques (dry brush, zip-a-tone, angular lines, etc.).

Well then, a natural development is really the best way to progress. I myself actually struggle with that aspect, I must confess. Most times I try to "force it". I really envy the artists like you who can just trust your tools, lay it down as it goes along and the whole drawing turns out right any way. For me, I have to plan and plot and scheme and decide composition and anatomy.... I do this so hard I'm usually hunched over my page like a super-villain. Ha.

JonasScharf In reply to Atlas0 [2014-07-10 07:58:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm not claiming I got it all figured out yet! And my drawings definitely don't always turn out right.
During the pencil stage everybody struggles a bit I think. That's where you have to get the proportions and gesture and all that right.
However, I found that drawing my pencils on a smaller piece of paper than the final inks helps me keep things a bit more dynamic and almost gives you more of a sketchbook feeling because you don't have to worry about messing up your "precious" bristol.
Haha, I know that villain-hunch only too well
