Developed and utilized by the Planetary Exploration and Survey Trust (PEST) the OO-101 Omnibus Class was designed for long duration missions of thirty years and replaced the now aging OO-30 Pele Class as the frontline explorer for much of the closing decades of the Second Great Galactic Expansion (SEGE). Pure science vessels, they required a crew of eighty who worked tirelessly for years at a time in the vessel, travelling via subspace to new and unexplored sections of space, and systems, and then committing to extensive scanning of what they found there which was subsequently reported back in regular data drops via subspace transmission so that headquarters were kept up to date. Unlike the OO-30 Pele Class, the OO-101 was vast, roomy and comfortable and designed with emphasis on comfort while researching.

It featured something that was a rarity on research vessels of that era - space to surface shuttlecraft and carried ten of them in its aft bay. Much of the vessel's interior was given over to science and data storage, but was also well-armed, had formidable defensive shields and weapons arrays so if it did come under attack it could give as good as it got. It is known that forty-two thousand, six hundred and ninety-one of these vessels were constructed and sent out to explore the whole of the galactic disc, and that the last one in active service remained so for thirty years before being recalled so that a more advanced craft could be fielded. Of this number, approximately eleven percent have vanished without trace, another six percent were destroyed by hostile action or by known disaster.
