The artist really picked a great angle here for a macro shot. The bubbles of light really make the branch pop out against the background. It really helps that the picture is in black and white. I can only imagine the colors distracting you from the branch.
I took one star off for Technique and half a star for Originality. This is simply because there is just such a narrow area of focused branch and that focused area happens to be dead center in the picture. The narrow area of focus could be fixed by focusing on an area that was more parallel to the lens then the section that appears to be coming right out at you.
I took two stars off for Impact. One star, again, for the narrow range of focus that is centered, and the second star I took off is because there is too much dead space. The artist wants us to focus on that branch in the middle, however, the rest of the picture where the bubbles of light are, really take away from the impact of that branch. The branch almost gets lost in the picture. This is easily fixed by cropping the picture down (much like the critique app does) and leaving just a centimeter or two above the top of the highest part of the branch and a centimeter or two just below the bottom of the branch.

This taken together with "Nerve" acts as a neat diptych. The softness of the background against the jaggedness of the branch gives this an interesting feel...placing the branch about half way makes me think of a paper being torn.
