Imagine if Starswirl and the other Pillars hadn't treated him so poorly. He wouldn't have tried to duplicate their magic and he wouldn't have become the Pony of Shadows.

He is actually the most realistic villian we have in this show. Not like Nm . She was the first one so she wasn't really fleshed out. Or tirek who didn't have a actual reason to destroy equestria other being a maniac. Styian was betrayed by his friends who wouldn't listen to him. He actually had a good reason to turn on his socalled friends

This is what happens when misunderstandings and a trio of Sirens screws with poor Stygie here.
Well at least it wasn't a fear-leaching demon that was planted inside Stygie since his birth, only beginning to do its damage at a certain point in his life, presenting countless Nightmares and hallucinations, making him forget everything he was scared of except the thing that made it start doing its damage, slowly growing over the years, finally becoming strong enough to take over his body, only to be exterminated by everybody's belief in Stygian except for Star Swirl the Bearded, who then slowly becomes manipulated by what's left of said demon to get revenge on Stygie and gains just enough power to turn Star Swirl into a crazy-powerful demon-monster that can only by truly exterminated by Stygie's words of kindness about how doubt is never the answer.

"You can't... lock up... the Darkness..."
Beautiful imagery as always JonFawkes. Keep up the awesome work. Its a little annoying just how often unicorns seem to go evil in this show, however. Ridiculously almost. Let's see: Sombra, Sunset, Starlight, Trixie, Flim and Flam, Tempest, Rarity (briefly, but still), Sable...

Maybe it's because unicorns are more magically sensitive and prone to poking at things they don't understand?

Or magic is inherently dangerous. It's even worse in the human world, after all.
Just kinda sad we don't see the kind of evil that can come from a rogue Earth Pony or Pegasus very often. And never as a season finale level threat. I mean, aside from the occasional hilarious nightmare sequence (with laser eyes) can you imagine just how terrifying, say, Fluttershy could be with an army of animal critters doing her bidding, or Rainbow Dash causing storm-level chaos? Or Pinkie Pie... good grief an evil Pinkie Pie...

There is that. And I think the reason for magic taking centre stage for villainy is because Earth and pegasus ponies in general are harder to work with outside of very specific special talents. I mean, the worst Joe Average Earth pony could do would be knocking down buildings, and a pegasus could whip up a storm or two, but the local constabulary and the weather department would take exception to that, and it's easier to do this sort of thing as a team than by yourself. Unicorns, on the other hand, are only really limited by their magical power and skill, which restricts the level of firepower they can bring to bear an how long it takes to learn how to bring the firepower to bear. That's pretty much it. The unicorns we've seen in the series have a lot of reach in regards to their special talent, especially in the case of Twilight and Starlight, and the average unicorn is only one or two levels down form that. There's very little stopping them from simply force-beaming all before them into submission if they put their minds to it.

Practically, you're probably right.
Just, from an outside perspective, seeing all these fallen unicorns... makes me think the species is predisposed for evil. Again, do we want the list? In fact, I think we can add Sweetie Belle to it. She tried to sabotage her sister and ruin her career.

I really don't think unicorns are predisposed for evil any more so than we humans are for destruction. It's a prevalent tendency, yes, but as with humans the deciding factor is stubborn pride. Every single unicorn you mentioned has pride as a flaw, which is magically exacerbated into misdeeds of varying severity. We have seen that magical power and emotion are very closely linked for unicorns, especially negative ones. More humble unicorns like Sunburst, Twilight (or at least who Twilight used to be until her personality got shoved through the Hasbro-brand money-fuelled alicorn filter) and post-Twilight exposure Sunset and Starlight on the other hand, have power, knowledge and most importantly the wisdom and experience to use that power wisely.
It's the difference between the twenty people who throw their used cigarettes on the ground and stamp them out, and the two or three that dispose of them responsibly.

I agree for the most part, except for that "Hasbro-brand money-fuelled alicorn filter" part. While I personally prefer Twilight as a unicorn, I don't mind her as an alicorn (in fact I think most people have gotten used to it by now), and she's still Twilight Sparkle, just with wings. I also highly doubt that Hasbro is greedy, otherwise they wouldn't have cared for the show as much as they do (i.e. this season has generally done pretty well.)
I really don't want to start a fight with you, but I feel like I had to say something.

Nah, you're fine. I mean, I like alicorn Twilight too, but I just feel like they could have taken her character in a different and more rounded role than they did.

And here's Pony Syndrome in a way. Became evil because he was unable to be like his heroes (granted, Stygian's case was just a huge ball of misunderstandings).
