(at a battle between vlad the impaler's forces and the turks , a single man stands on a hill watching as the fight goes on)
man : there's only 1 solution to end this carnage (walks down to where the battle is , pulls out a jukebox , plays the song "surfin' bird" and dances , with the romanians and turks soon joining in)

I'm good lol. I see a piece of art depicting a period of history and I'm able to nail it down.

The flag is a bit strange. As far as I remember from my own Romanian history, the Valahia's flag was representing a black bird (I don't know the species - an eagle perhaps), holding the cross. the coat of arms was almost identically, but there was the star you have respresented in your paint.

Still, this is a very good composition. I really like it ! Congrats!

my only gripe is the flag. didn't he fight for Christendom since the Ottoman Turks were Muslim?

JonHodgson In reply to Codeyellow07 [2012-10-25 14:21:09 +0000 UTC]

The symbols for the various religions were not as clear cut then as they are now. That's the flag of Wallacia at the time. Pretty much all the flags in the region featured a crescent in some form.

Cool to see some artwork that isn't portraying Vlad as a ruthless, emotionless depot. (Don't get me wrong, the guy was cruel beyond measure, but not half as evil as pop culture makes him out to be.) Most of the stories about him were propagana spread by the Hungarians to justify their arresting him, when, at the time, he was adored throughout Europe for holding the Ottomans at bay.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JonHodgson In reply to bashibozuk [2009-11-23 10:01:41 +0000 UTC]

It was a long time since I did this one, and I recall the banner designs were detailed by the author of the book - an expert in the period.

However doing a little research into the books I used for reference - especially the excellent Armies of the Middle Ages Vol2 by the redoubtable Ian Heath, that design was used quite widely by the various sides in the Balkans at the time, not just the Ottomans. Wallachia and Moldavia specifically made wide use of the star and crescent. The star and crescent had seen a lot of use by the Byzantines, before the Ottomans ever used it. There's even a few fellows in the Holy Roman Empire using stars and crescents as their heraldic symbols at the time. Saxony in particular.

Fascinating stuff though, eh?

dashinvaine In reply to JonHodgson [2010-07-12 12:57:23 +0000 UTC]

Interesting reading these comments about the crescent flag in a Christian army. There is a similar star and crescent on the arms of the city of Portsmouth. I used to wonder whether this was derived from the Ottoman order of the Crescent (which had been awarded to Admiral Nelson) but it could be much older. Some crusader coins (including those minted by Bohemond) and Knights Templar seals (including the seal of the Templars used in England) also featured crescents and stars.

JonHodgson In reply to dashinvaine [2010-07-13 09:05:58 +0000 UTC]

One suspects that often "we" get this stuff back to front. A symbol like the crescent is almost elemental, but becomes co-opted by it's largest user. So the cross, the swatika, the crescent all become attached to the most famous user, but as symbols they have far far older heritages.

This conversation is most interesting. Gerayel-Eternal says "Cool to see some artwork that isn't portraying Vlad as a ruthless, emotionless depot. (Don't get me wrong, the guy was cruel beyond measure, but not half as evil as pop culture makes him out to be.) Most of the stories about him were propagana spread by the Hungarians to justify their arresting him, when, at the time, he was adored throughout Europe for holding the Ottomans at bay." And I agree.
