i also suck with shadows so looked up some dust and now i have a idea to make good shadows the shadow you have is a little 2 dark + the outlines of the body wasn't shadowed but i made that mistake plenty times 2.

i tryd Paint.net but it made me puke so i kept using photoshop, Paint tool SAI or Manga Studio 4 depends on the sitiuetion.

But as long as you can make layers its ok make a standard white background get a new layer and make it light gray make another layer and make lineart on that get a layer above the grey layer and make shadows on it make another layer and put the colors in and done i think i never did it still making line art.

i also didn't gimp a long time ago but i like the 3 above more.

Hmmm... Well I'm basically working on my own.
I have no previous knowledge about any software that I could use for shading and lighting affect to some of my artworks...

Should I go out and get one of the softwares you mention, or stick with Paint.Net for awhile?

Paint Tool SAI is free and gimp as well but Photoshop and Manga Studio 4 are pay + manga Studio is more for making comics didnt use it yet but i at least got it already (i downloaded Photoshop and Manga studio 4) if you are planing on trying one of the free i recammand trying Paint Too Sai but thats up to you

I use Photoshop the most cus i got custom brushes on it but i like the way you can color on paint tool sai have more options on real brush typse like just pencil pen airbrush normal painter brush and you have some other optiions dont fully understand Paint Tool Sai yet but is neat for collering i have 1 pic that i fully made in paint tool sai ( i looked but i tink i deleted it stoopid me)

yup line art is a bit harder on Sai then on Photohop cus i use pentool and other tools of it so it will look better but with colors i tink Sai can make the most interesting results

Dang... Than I need a drawpad than.
It hurts to draw and color on the standard laptop mousepad. My fingers are killing me.
