Description
Pin up for the Regular Show done for class. It was practice inking with pens like Microns and Faber Castells. I colored it because I thought it'd be fun.Related content

That would have been a fun alternate scene to have drawn, Rigby wailing on the taxi with a tree

Ello Gov'nor! xD
Look really cool, like a comic feel to it.
But it's weird when Rigby doesnt have his dark brown fur color.

I made his color more yellow because of the bright yellow high beams following him. Those would push his brown into much lighter colors so what your looking at is him being influenced by his environment

Oh ok!
Still, looks weird for me.
Anyway, can you help me how to color as good as you?
At least give me a tutorial or something?
I wanna color better so badly... :C
This is called cell shading right?

Well I learned from a professional comic colorist, and it would really take too long to go over every step in comments, but I can give you some pointers. First off, use color for storytelling. The first urge is to use every color in the box but limiting your palette to colors that mean something to your drawing is important. If you're coloring an image of a person in love, you would use colors that represent that. Limiting your palette will lead to more striking and dynamic art. Take a color theory course if you can, that will help you figure out what colors symbolize and how to make them pop. Also, use saturated and desaturated colors to inject or remove life from your colors. Sometimes the best way to show that someone has been deflated emotionally is to make their colors a little less saturated so they seem duller. And this is cel shading although we learned it as "hard cuts" since I'm not painting a cel. But these tips will apply to all coloring styles no matter how you want to do it.

So like, I should consider what mood the pic is having, and once I got a theme, I should make it fit the scene...
And also to experimenting with effects by saturating the colors...
Thanks man!
This would be a lot easier if i dont have to settle with scanned drawings or I could just trace it if I had a graphics tab...
Using multiply darkens the color and its pretty hard doing it with scans especially the paper texture is like gray.

Yeah, the best art evokes a mood, and color is one of the best ways for an artist to make you feel something from an image. Warm colors and cool colors can be used to imply temperature, and putting one on top of another can make each other pop. I used it in this one, the warm yellow Rigby stands out against the cool blue Taxi, and Mordecai's cool blue sits on the black and it makes him fade into the distance.
This is a scanned drawing, I inked this by hand, scanned the image and then adjusted the Curves in photoshop to make the black and white contrast super high. Then I bitmapped the image to ensure that there were no grays in there. Once that was done, I was ready to color. I like to work very cleanly so bitmapping it works great for me, if you draw loose and roughly, you may just wanna go with the curves and skip the bitmap step.

Dude, can you tell/teach me a step by step on how you did this...?
I mean, Ive been searching on google everywhere about making it more black and white.
Ive also experimented with the contrast or saturation thing, but I always keep on destroying the image...

Well first you need a good quality scan, 300 dpi is most accepted one but 600 can make editing easier later. Scan in grayscale if you can, unless you did the image in color which is gonna be harder to scan but you'll have to figure out your computer and programs subtleties to get that one straight. Black and white is just easier to figure. Once you have the scan in and its in gray scale, in photoshop go to your layers window and there should be an icon for New Fill or Adjustment layer, click on that and select Curves. A window will pop open with a grid and a line running diagonally thru it. This line represents you contrast and it will always start out this way. What you wanna do is click on the line and by moving the line to make a curve, you're making grays turn black or grays turn white. The black is at the top corner of the grid, so if you grab the line high and pull up, you'll start making your blacks much darker. Pull on the line low and you'll start to adjust your whites and make them more clean. Generally you want to make the curve into an S shape, but it'll depend on each image. By playing with that you can get an image with a much bolder black to white contrast and you'll make things easier for you when it comes to digital coloring.
